Babies: general abuse of Pacifiers

I heard as a baby sleeps with a pacifier reduces the risk of SIDS. I tried to give my baby a pacifier and sometimes she does take it or spits it out shortly after it in her mouth. Do babies usually have a hard time getting used to it or is it they either take or they dont?
