Alternatives to Books
The e-book is a long time in coming. Way back in the year 1980 when the Personal Computer in its infancy, we were told that the logic was inescapable: Now that ordinary people could read text on a screen, were then numbered days of the printed page. There was a better way. After all, were Personal Computer would soon we are assured in every office, every home, and everyone would have access to the largest library in the world, in digital form. In the future, so story went, you'd walk into someone's new house and the most striking feature would be that there would be no bookcases. There would be no need for it! All data would be stored on disks, out of sight.
That first myth is the easiest to deal with. People still have boards, but they are not necessarily suffer under the weight of books, no. But they are likely to include other media such as CDs, DVDs, videotapes (since people have not all moved yet) and even, surprise, surprise, that return the year 1970, the cassette tape. Well, cassettes considered a bit old now, and many home entertainment centers do not have a means to play them like they used to are. But people such as tapes. They are small, handy, easy to carry in your pocket, and can be played anywhere in the home, office and car. Yes, but CDs are better, we are told. Better sound quality, better control, they are no better. As many know a computer geek, a round plastic disk is more convenient than a small plastic box. The disk rolls the desk or table, it gets scratched, it slides along the side of things and can not be retrieved. It is also not what people really want. In the days of vinyl when cassettes were invented, ordinary people took a great use of the cassette. You could borrow your friend's record, tape in your house, give it back and have a workable copy. No. that's not happening: CDs do not. Even without 'borrowing' your buddy's music, and the use of access to the Internet and download sites, The problem is that some CD players refuse to play 'home made' drives for any reason whatsoever. So you can not slip your favorite songs in your pocket and carry them they play around and ah over, but that's why someone invented the i-Pod, you say. Yes, that's the trick of storing music to make you are lucky enough to find the Web, your friends, "something someone gave you for Christmas, but it adds a layer of technology, the computer. If you look at an old tape recorder so friendly, the most important is how easy it was to work, how little control. Compare that to the laptop computer. Ouch, there is no comparison. Energy saving and storing music is now more flexible, people will tell you. Yes, but not as downright simple!
Back to books. I can load text on my laptop. If I access the internet on my laptop or desktop computer, I download just about any book that was written yesterday, but there's one problem: the computer screen. A screen is not as easy to carry around in my pocket like a book. Compare the situation on a crowded train, early in the morning. People with paperbacks can read them in every corner, or pressed against the door or hanging on a dangling support. The person with the laptop needs a table, or even a seat, but room to move their elbows. Ah, but that's why someone invented the PDA, you say. Your text small pocket on your machine and scan the words in a tight corner. But when you offer the features of a PDA, you get a very strange conclusion. The handheld device is portable, convenient, fits in your pocket and can be carried around. Can be accessed anywhere and shared with friends. It's small, friendly and human scale. In fact it is exactly like a book! There are only two differences, one good, one bad. One is that you have more than one book store at a given time. Wow, you're saying that a device the size of a paperback book can actually save dozens of paperback books in themselves. It's almost like a fairy tale: imagine a book that had blank pages, and every day you could want and a new story would show it. Then it would be blank pages until tomorrow, when a brand new, undiscovered story would appear. What could be better than that? Well, something that was actually readable are. Printers have been working for years fonts that are easy on the eye and read in all lights to discover. The PDA has to try and the pure joy of writing black duplicate, on a white background, a trick that can fail in poor light conditions or when the batteries are low. In fact, the problem for the hand-held devices is exactly that. They can not deliver a printed page, it's just a nice average of one copy. That is their weakness.
Still, the market is progressing each year and "the e-book" we were told of and eventually delivered us to our specifications. Unfortunately, that means if you go back and check the Internet for e-books to read that they are downloadable in a variety of formats Vie confusing as machines with the new universal standard. Maybe it will happen. Perhaps even now, the hand-held device developed by the new, acceptable alternative the novel in the form of pocket become. But the test here is back to reality, not in the laboratory. Just as the paperless office ', it's a promise that is not delivered, a vision that is not true. For whatever reason, some annoying, illogical, all too human reason the people who actually enjoy reading, as still addicted to the touch, feel and maybe even the smell of the printed page. They stuff books in their pockets in the morning paper and read novels in their free time and lunch hours. Yet they will pull out of their pockets their little electronic friends to enjoy stories, tall tales and inventions. Why not? We can only speculate. It is frustrating for the marketing manager, but interesting for the sociologist. The e-book is here, they cry, so why will not just people working together and start using them?

What is the size of a paperback book?
I need to know what the format is a standard paperback book, font, line spacing, indent distance, page size, margin size, etc.
You mean the format your book to a publisher of paperbacks? It is exactly what the submission guidelines say it is. The work you submit is not much resemble the finished product, the printed book. When the guidelines are not specific details about the format, or are there no guidelines, stick with Courier 12 (or Times New Roman 12, for some publishers – but I would be safe with Courier) One-inch margins on all four sides, producing 25 double-spaced lines per page Indent paragraphs 1 / 2 inch using the tab, no spaces No extra blank lines between paragraphs underlined text would be printed in italics in the book Ragged right margin (not justified) Turn off hyphenation Turn widow and orphan protection Slugline, right: Surname / ONEWORDTITLE / # (example: Dickens/CITIES/75) Start chapters 1 / 3 of the way down the page
