It's a great lesson for the children as their beloved companion of the intrepid toy is packaged and shipped to a local nursery. Tommy's All Grown Up and the university. It bags for waste packaging, gift, attic, and college, just when the experts tell us to do stuff, and toys suddenly adrift. Sure, they are not played in a very long time but it does not justify sending them away.
Especially if they are sent to Sunnyside Daycare, a nice place to visit unless you delegated to the youngest playroom. These kids have no respect for toys, they tear them, drool on them, and otherwise damaging them. The toy's attempts to move the older kids in the room gets confused with a brutal dictatorship led by the soft and comfy teddy bear who hides a heart of steel and ice under his purple coat.
Wearing the first lieutenant is none other than Ken, that strutting peacock of a young companion for Barbie doll. He is tanned and ascoted above all comprehension and a vicious, ruthless Gestapo pop. His rock-solid jaw is the face of war and oppression.
So much for the kiddies to take in.
Lasseter's unbroken winning streak has a lot to do with his respect for young viewers. His films are layered and complex and demand a child to think and analyze as well as enjoyment. Parents will be delighted with its references to the sixties and seventies culture (time of Ken's wardrobe VAT) and musical choices. This is a very intelligent and sensitive, yet realistic view of politics, struggle, will, and justice. It's a winning combination that can not fail.
It's also hilarious. Pixar's playful sense of humor and irony are in full swing, and yet in the end, after all the Sturm and Drang, we'll probably go home after the movie, just pull Youth toys we hid and remember back to when the world was new, exciting and full of opportunities.
Toy Story 3 is a triumph in every conceivable way.
