Notes from the Blonde Experiment: Releasing self to freedom;
The experiment began in a circle of spiritual warriors. The question I suggested the group was "What mask or persona would be the most difficult for you to step into? What image would you never want to portray? Who you most right outside of yourself?"
Of an independent, rebellious, struggling artist, I heard, "Be a business person, wearing a suit and tie every day and have a lot of money." Of a butch, masculine lesbian comfortable, shave my legs and wear dresses and makeup. "A successful business woman replied:" Be a street person, unkempt and dirty. "My answer was:" Be a stereotypical ditzy, sexy blonde. "
My image of myself as a serious, informed spiritual teacher not jive with things culturally deemed blonde: Silly, sexy, playful, seductive. The mere thought of this energy associated with me made me tremble. In my own mind I was graceful, intelligent, thoughtful, compassionate, reliable, and comforting. With my long brown hair and a bit baggy clothes, I felt safe and acceptable.
It was a dangerous comfort, I realized. Every time we settle into our masks, we believe that no matter how good they look, we deny a different part of ourselves. I had smashed masks before, and knew the tremendous energy we get when we walk straight into our fears with open eyes.
Many years ago I moved from a dilapidated, non-flowing water in the middle trailer of a large horse ranch into a small apartment in Hong Kong. These towering apartment complex where I lived with my parents, housed at least ten times as many people as the city I had left. My goal: to shift from a young, politically active, independent rebel form a mature, hardworking businesswoman. It was just before the summer, mind you. I wanted my pay off debt, and I was wondering if I could pull this undercover operation. I knew that I loved the mainstream world for fear of losing my heart, of some equivalent way. And I knew the only way out was through.
In the plane to Hong Kong I started a list of all the people I remembered interacting with the past twelve years in my college town: my dearest friends, lovers, teachers, students, acquaintances, even people whose names I've forgotten. More than four hundred names filled my diary when I finished the list. Somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, I began to recapitulate from the top of my list. One by one I sent love and gratitude to each person, breathing, energy I had lost back, releasing all the energy I had taken. Fifteen hours later when I landed, I was ready to create a new dream.
I shaved my legs, my hair cut, borrowed a few things from my sister costumes, and landed a job combining stocks and bonds at Lehman Brothers Investment Corporation. I knew nothing about stocks and bonds. I felt funny wearing a suit. But I was determined to commit to this new mask, I so feared. I worked 12-17 hours a day, often grab lunch and dinner at McDonalds. I loved it. I felt liberated from my past. I returned to the United States with a new confidence and a sense of unlimited possibilities.
Over ten years later, on another great experiment, I went blonde. My mission: to re-break my limited self-concept and willingly step in what I judged it most. It took me months to build up my nerve to go against the fears and understandings: "It will ruin my hair, I have a new group of students come in, I can not blond and sexy it is not necessary, yet … "But once I felt the fear, it was too late, I knew it had to do.
The transformation took seven hours, as my hair went from brown, to pinkish-orange, and finally to platinum blonde. I drove back from the hairdresser, magically attracted to the shiny gold fields of oat straw in the sun outside my window. I felt filled with golden light, my blonde hair to communicate with all things gold and filling every cell in my body with sunlight. The secret of the mystical life was delighted very blonde at times. Sunlight, golden hills long golden hair and opened me to a new level of awareness and deep connection with internal light honey gold.
But more often than not during the experiment blonde I cringed when I looked in the mirror at my new self. I felt self-conscious. I felt fake, too sensual, too loud. I wanted to calm and respectable. And yet when I go to the fears and doubts and decisions that came along, I said to myself: "No matter what the outside world looks like, how people see you. All that matters is your own self-love, your connection with the divine, your connection to the wisdom of the natural world. "
The results of the experiment were great: unexpected mystical connection, disconnect my need for approval at the level I was not even aware of, sincere smile dolled up, Hollywood-style fake blondes I once judged fiercely, a new sense of playfulness and foolish joy of my release need to be seen as a respectful spiritual teacher, and come in my true nature, stepping more fully in live from the inside out, not from the outside
I've regained my inner blonde.

What basic color looks best with platinum blonde highlights?
My hairdresser says that all have platinum blonde would look bad, because I would even look "pale." But for me only pale skin, people can pull off platinum. People with brown garlic gross last? Anyways … I have a medium-dark reddish brown now, and it is wonderful, but I want a change. They suggested that platinum blonde highlights in. … but to me it looks like a skunk, even if my hair isn't black. I'm just not fond of it really? So she suggested and dark ash blonde platinum highlights? I think platinum highlights only good with hair that is already a pretty light blonde. Otherwise look tacky. Does anyone have suggestions for a basic color, that she thinks that it look good? Ok I really would not even do this thing still blonde highlights, I'm still thinking about it and any input would help. I know that many people dont like platinum blonde, which is fine. I totally agree with you, i dont know what your hairdresser is smoking. unless you're already blonde hair, I would stay away from platinum because it is so unnatural. if you're a big change, id go darkish / dirty blonde with a normal blonde highlights.
