American Eskimo – Dog Breeds – Everything You Need to Know

Breed Group: Non-sporting
Weight: Toy 6-10 kg, Miniature 10-20 pounds, 18-35 pounds Standard
Height: Toy 9-12 inches, Miniature 12-15 cm, 15-19 cm standard
Overview
It is believed that this breed originates from the German Spitz. These dogs were brought to the U.S. by immigrants. Many say that the race has changed during the first world war because of negative feelings toward the Germans. During the years 1920 and 1930, the popularity of American Eskimo dogs increases. Traveling circuses show the many talents of these dogs, including walking on tight ropes. These dogs became famous as an artist, but these days they usually are kept as pets.
Temperament
American Eskimo was very pleasant and loving dogs and they show much affection towards their owners. While being very tough, and they like to play. This breed is exceptionally good with children – they are also extremely smart dogs. You will find that the American Eskimo is very easy to train, and they do very well in obedience training. This breed is a bit wary of people they do not know, but friends will be with them as they are entered. The American Eskimo can be destructive if they not included in family activities or isolated. It is important to deal with these dogs in a firm but gentle way. This breed thrives on attention, and they also barking.
Make
In order to prevent mats and tangles form, the American Eskimo brushed with a stiff brush twice a week. During shedding, these dogs should be brushed on a daily basis. These varieties tend to suffer from dry skin, so it is not necessary to bathe these dogs all too often – and then only with a mild shampoo.
Training
The American Eskimo Dog is a very trainable dog due to their high intelligence. This breed excels in obedience training and the best results are obtained when training is done in a firm but gentle way. It is very important to socialize these dogs from an early age to prevent they aggressively later in life. The American Eskimo dog will do very well in guarding, competitive obedience, agility and performing tricks.
Health
This breed is fairly healthy, but they do have some problems with their eyes and tear ducts. The American Eskimo also tend to suffer from hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Dermatitis can also be caused if their thick coats are not clean and free of fleas. Also ensure that these dogs give sufficient exercise to show that weight gain easy.
