Common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a common plant with a large natural habitat that spreads across the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America. In some parts of the U.S. and most European countries are considered invasive weeds and mugwort are not very popular with gardeners.
The plant – which are sometimes known as common wormwood, wild wormwood, Old Uncle Henry, Chrysanthemum Weed, Sailor's Tobacco and (Strangely enough) Naughty Man – is a herbaceous perennial plant with small flowers that grows to about two meters (six meters) high.
The English name 'Mugwort' is thought likely derived from 'mycg' Old English (Meaning Midge) and 'wyrt "(meaning root or plant). It is thought that this name comes from conventional from the plant to use as an insect repellent.
Mugwort have a range of applications in traditional medicines, as well as more modern applications, and the flower buds of the plant were sometimes used to a bitter taste add to meat and fish dishes. As well as being used to repel insects, are often used as mugwort anthelminthics (parasitic worm removal), as a general purpose remedy for the heart (in Ayurveda) to terminate pregnancies (In ancient Chinese medicine, using a large dose), and correct breech presentations (also in Chinese medicine, with smaller doses).
The plant is more modern applications use the mild psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties of some of the constituent compounds, particularly those known by the chemical name thujones. Thujones believed to be a similar effect on the brains as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC – the active ingredient in cannabis) and for this reason mugwort species are often used in herbal smoking mixtures, where they mixed with other psychoactive plants, such as the Lion's tail (Leonotus leonorus).
The plant also has a long history of use in the medieval witchcraft, especially because of its psychoactive properties and because it was thought to bring good fortune. It is thought that the plant greatly improves dreams – especially the ability to lucid dreaming and events control in dreams and dream recall upon waking events. It was sometimes used by proponents of "astral projection," who claimed to believe that they were able to leave their bodies and will explore the world using only their minds (or souls, if you prefer.
