Got Teenagers?
As I looked over my shoulder niece to get a glimpse of the book that she can not divorce, I read to catch Blair Waldorf reached at the tablecloth and squeezed Nate's knee. The candlelight was making her horny. If only Daddy knew what we plan to do after this, she thought spinning "(you know you me, Cecily von Ziegesar). Suddenly, my palms were sweaty, my throat constricted, and that familiar voice shouts from the caverns of my soul, "Do not your mother not your mother! ".
11 years of age, reach a new book on high bookshelf of my mother, are you there, God?, It's Me, Margaret (Judy Blume). A reluctant readers, the title peeked my interest. As I opened the page title, I heard "You should be ashamed voice" bellows from my mother. "That book PUT DOWN!" Ricocheted from the walls of the room sucking the air from my lungs and making my shoulders in fear. Shame, I dropped the book, and shuffled into my bedroom. We never talked about the incident again.
The dilemma. To let them read or not read. To my mother or my mother. Parents monitor their teen television programs, using the Internet, friendships and activities, but what about their books? Most parents are happy with their 13-year-old daughter to see engrossed in a book rather than the causing problems with friends or sitting in a backseat with her boyfriend. I found the book in the teen section, and it is on the list of the best seller. It should be ok, right? But is it?
Many of us have seen the recent stories. Reporters inventory of all adult issues wrapped in pretty plaid book covers charged for the pleasure of your teen. Anchors to warn us of the dangerous items hidden in this book. Series such as The Clique, Gossip Girl, and A-List that much of the negative press. When I listen to the media and blame the Gossip Girl series and the Pretty Committee (from the Clique series) for teen pregnancy, materialism, drug use, and oh yeah – all that is wrong with today's adolescence, I'm getting my mother? Whoever forbids the books, which never has these important calls, or I am a responsible parent? To this day, I still have that Judy Blume novel read. Just mentioning the title fills me with fear and guilt of disappointing my mother and my curiosity.
Here's a new idea, instead of telling our daughters the book and the back-road with drop hands up, let's embrace the activities that fill our teenage lives as opportunities to establish trust and respect. In the first place to celebrate our children choose to read in their spare time. Go ahead, Pat yourself on the back! In a world plagued by illiteracy, and their teachers give your child a nod for taking steps towards fighting the epidemic. It can not Chaucer, but it is a step in the right direction. Second, accept that a teenager is a peculiar kind. They speak their own language, seldom smile, and his 57 ways to roll their eyes – each with its own meaning. We as parents are very few opportunities to communicate with our children at puberty. Yes, that awful "C" word, communicate. Let us therefore take advantage of every opportunity available to us. If we reduce the time a ban on these books in of media hysteria and more time to explore them, we would see them as a gold mine to start real conversations about the issues our teens face every day. For example, use error Sophie made with Chaz in, what my mother did not know, to discuss Internet security. The risks associated with online relationships, and how to sound decisions take on whether these people to Blair, the Gossip Girl series, a catalyst for a real discussion about abstinence requirements. I'm not referring to reading your mother "The birds and bees", but a real dialogue about the pressures of an intimate relationship. Teens connect with these characters, hence their popularity and position on the bestseller list. Let we stop labeling of these books as smut and see the abundant opportunities they offer parents a fair discussion of topical issues to boot.
Now We are realistic. Parents have no time to sit down and read every book their teen picks up. Most parents have a hard enough time to figure out how to carpool, practices, games, equilibrium considerations, and more unnecessary extracurricular activities of their child is involved. Fortunately, there are resources to help parents understand what their teen is reading. Websites like bookbuddies4parents.com teenreads.com and his two agents.
