Watercolors – the Watercolor Palette
Choosing the right paint colors is an important part of the process of watercolor. In fact, building your watercolor technique begins with the color palette.
Palette is the term for a specific selection of paint (or "colors"). Although you can buy hundreds of colors in tubes, blocks, or bottles on the market are mixed and packed, you really only a few basic colors, and you can mix the whole spectrum of colors. Certainly it is much more economical, and many artists think it's more convenient.
Historically, a primary palette consists of four to six colors. Technically, you can use the three primary colors to get all the rest – that would red (technically, this magenta), blue (cyan) and yellow. However, the mixture of these colors, a somewhat muted or washed out look to give a number of resulting colors thus adding a deeper blue instead of only the cyan, and maybe a purple, a red-orange, black and natural white and one can pretty basic palette. Oh, and many artists, adds a shade of green only for convenience.
Contemporary artists can use a six color palette with the following options:
- yellow: Cadmium Pale yellow (PY35 or PY37) or Benzimidazolone Yellow (PY151 or PY154)
- red orange: pyrrole Orange (PO73) or cadmium scarlet (PR108)
- magenta: quinacridone Magenta (PR122) or quinacridone Rose (PV19)
- Blue violet: Ultramarine Blue (PB29)
- Cyan: Phthalo Turquoise (PB16) or Phthalo cyan (PB17)
- green: Phthalo (PG7 PG36 Shade of Blue yellow tint)
As a matter of convenience, experienced watercolor artists usually add one or more paint made with an iron oxide pigment (called "earth" pigments) and sold under the names marketing yellow ocher, raw sienna, raw umber, burnt sienna, burnt umber and / or Venetian red. Exactly the same brown or ocher colors can be coordinated with the six colors shown above, but it is annoying to do. If dark colors also require difficult mix, most painters prefer to add a dark neutral paint mixed with a carbon (black) pigment and a color pigment system a slight color bias to produce, usually sold under the names marketing indigo, Payne's gray, neutral tint or sepia.
You want to experiment with your own watercolor palette before you only the right one for your needs. Watercolor can be as simple or as complex as you care to make. For more tips on watercolor techniques and watercolor instruction, visit www.watercolor-instruction.com

Anyone know of a complete list of variations of color with acrylic paint?
Hi, I recently saw a list of acrylic recorded by variation of color and their relations in the color wheel. It makes me wonder if there is a list of all acrylics out there and how many would be there. It is useful to the mixing of primary and secondary know but it would be more useful to find out how many colors are created. Red I saw so many of them. For example, for red is: cadmium red, red Napthol, Pyrrole Red, etc. acrylics etc. How many variations are actually made for each color? Any reference to where to find a list online would be great. Thanx for your help.
Each manufacturer is proud of different colors, the amount of colors they produce and the techniques which they were produced. If you go online and you can see every manufacturer and their line of product, how it is made and of what. Some of the manufacturers have more than one line of products with different pigments, colors, fillers, etc. Some of them will even send you maps of what they produce. Here is a list of some of them http://www.goldenpaints.com/products/color/index.php http://www.liquitex.com/Products/paints.cfm http://www.dickblick.com/categories / acrylic /
