A Summer Must Read – "The Queen of Bedlam"
As we paid the head long in the hottest days of summer, it is very important that we arm ourselves with the necessary tools for us to Labor Day. What this means would be, you ask? Well, there's the sunscreen with an SPF 2500, or if you prefer, a full body, chemical and biological protective clothing for when you hit the beach.
But even within those pools, you need a copy of Robert McCammon's "The Queen of Bedlam."
Not being a literary guru, and with barely passing English courses in all my life, I do not know much about writing. Yes, I know, you can tell. But I know a darn good storyteller as I read one. And Robert McCammon is a heck of a good storyteller.
I ran across him many years ago when I took his book, "Swan Song, "a tale of good versus evil in a world devastated by a nuclear exchange. The story crosses America, and yet always feel locally. The plot was epic, but the components of subplots that dealt with the main characters felt intimate, for lack of a better term. That book hooked me this writer.
Since then I have read all his books. Like all great writers, in my opinion, as it is, Robert takes us (me) in the story. His writing grabs me and makes me feel for the characters. The plot must be, that being said, the characters and their development in the plot that touches me.
For a while, I could not find any new books or stories Robert. Then I saw a new title, "Speaks the Nightbird," Part I. He introduced Matthew Corbett within a historic setting in the late 17th century America. A woman is accused of a witch and Corbett to investigate.
It's a great book with so many characters and subplots so much that I have no idea how Robert kept of all characters. I had always assumed that Robert wrote in the horror / supernatural genre of books. I assumed that this plot would fall in that genre. This book transcends that genre. The is a novel of suspense and intrigue. Yes, it's about good versus evil, but all assumptions turn and turn like the book slowly builds to its conclusion. It is like a force of nature.
It's a damn good book.
Matthew Corbett continues his tour of the "Night Bird" for his rendezvous with "The Queen of Bedlam." Again, Robert McCammon showcases his versatility and amazing talent in the genres crossing directly into a thriller.
This page Turner in the early eighteenth century Manhattan. There is a serial killer on the loose and Matthew must find him. Then the book turns into a journey of rich characters, hairpin turns, unexpected surprises, and a bunch of "wow, who would have thought. "
For a warm, lazy days at the beach, this book will go your thoughts and imagination. Your biggest challenge will be to remember that You bake under a torturous Sun if you read this wonderful novel.
