Raggedy Ann

Britain in the World Wars
At the beginning of the 20th century, the world came the period of
imperialism. Britain was dominant challenged by other European countries and the
United States, for they had all the industrialized and were eager to
protection of their own markets and expanding their influence. The balance of power in Europe
had undergone major changes. A conflict of interests and colonial rivalry
Europe divided into two camps: the Central Powers included Germany, Austria-
Hungary, the Ottoman Empire1 Later, Bulgaria and the Allies were
mainly from France, the Russian Empire, the British Empire, Italy and the
United States. The conflict plunged the world into two devastating wars in
The first half of the 20th century.
The immediate cause of the First World War in the conflict was on the Balkan Peninsula. On
June 28, 1914, the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated by a young
Yugoslav ($ 3 ^ fl £ ^ CA) in Sarajevo – Austria blame Serbia for the murder and
was determined to revenge take. Both parties sought support from their
respective allies, Germany and Russia. This led to a showdown between the two
camps and World War broke out between the Central Powers and the Allied powers.
Eventually, more than 32 countries involved, 28 of which supported the Allied
Powers. The war ended with victory for the Allies.
The cost of the war was great. Britain was drained of its staff. Nearly a
million British men died and more than two million were wounded. 70% of the wholesale
ships were sunk or damaged. As a result, Britain lost sea supremacy. Although
victor, Britain emerged from the war with a huge debt, ten times
greater than that of the prewar years. Business was weak (Uplift), many factories
increased taxes and decreased closed.
The Great Depression2 1929 to 1933 brought additional problems to the UK
economy and society. UK position in the capitalist world was further
weakened. With the rise of the Nazi party in Germany, a new world war
threatening.
The Second World War was for all intents a continuation of World War I.
The Treaty of Versailles1, Germany was obliged to renounce its
colonies and permanently disarm. Moreover, Germany was to blame for starting the
war and was forced to a large sum in reparations. The Great Depression made
worse and led to the rise of fascism. Adolf Hitler aroused strong
nationalism and racism in Germany, boarding (JF = 0 $ on an ambitious plan to
Conquer Europe.
Reluctant to a new war, the British government, led by Neville fight
Chamberlain followed a policy of reconciliation. However, Hitler invaded Poland on
September 1.1939. Britain and France were forced to to declare war on Germany
September 3.1939. The following year Chamberlain resigned and Winston Churchill
Prime Minister.
Germany France attacked and forced to surrender in June 1940. Italy also introduced
war on the side of Germany. Britain was in a very dangerous position.
In 1941 the pressure was somewhat alleviated for England when Germany attacked the
Soviet Union, and Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. These operations of
aggression, the latter two countries moved into an alliance with Britain. With
the combined efforts of anti-Nazi forces, Germany surrendered unconditional
The May 7, 1945, one week after Hitler committed suicide.
Great Britain won the war, but at high cost. Around 357,000 people were slain and
500,000 were wounded or missing. The Navy was 30% smaller than before the war and
Britain lost its maritime supremacy forever to the United States. In addition, the
country had exhausted its reserves of gold, dollars and foreign investment, and
was deeply in debt to the United States.

Engelbreit's name, cute is my game
7 May 2010 by Stephy
Mary Engelbreit was a talented but struggling artist in her mid-twenties when she
flew to New York from her native St. Louis, hoping to find a job illustrating
children's books her life the target. So she was disappointed that the book has
she visited publishers turned her down. One even proposed her drawings can be
better suited greeting card.
"I was crushed," Engelbreit increasing. Greeting cards seemed a come-down from her
high expectations, but the advice was with her, and she decided to give it a
try. The results changed her life forever.
3 Today, Mary Engelbreit sells an astounding 14 million greeting cards per year. Her
popular designs on more than 2,000 products, including books, calendars,
and kitchen items. She runs a company with retail stores in nine cities (16 more
planned), and its products are carrida by 25,000 retailers. Annual retail
sales are in the $ 100 million range – all as a result of that fateful,
disappointing trip to New York. It's probably no coincidence that one of Engelbreit's
bolder maps shows a young girl in overalls, her bare feet on a desk, a farm
field in the window behind her. "We Do not Care'How They do it in
New York, "the card offers.
4 Once you know Engelbreit's signature style, you recognize her cards

peaches, and teapots, for example. Usually there is Ann Estelle, a woman with
Short, straight hair, big glasses, hat and an acid tongue. Ann Estelle (named
after her grandmother) is the imaginary representative perspective of Mary.
5 Engelbreit's cheerful, down-to-earth, humorous, and always fun. "I think the
Ould world use more cuteness, "She explains. Indeed it is her trademark. Her
business once characterized by a drawing by Ann Estellexagar in her mouth and drink

the world is complicated, it's nice to old stuff around
to help people cope with the demands of modern life. It's like comfort food. This is
Comfort Art. "
6 Old-fashioned art – and values – there is always the core of Engelbreit's
life.
Born June 5, 1952, in St. Louis, the eldest of three daughters, she began
drawing almost as oon if she could hold a pencil.
7 One of her earliest memories, from the age of four, is sketching her parents all
o to dress for the evening. "I was so impressed I had to take," she says
says. But what were her most mpressed illustrations from children's books
her mother read to her.
Artists such as Jessie Willcox Smith, illustrator of children's books literary classics,
and Johnny Ruelle, creator of Raggedy Ann were very influential in
development of her early rawings.
8 While in high school, Engelbreit sold to dozens of hand-drawn maps
a local shop for 25 cents a piece – its first venture into art and commerce. They

as a designer
at an advertising agency "learned me about the business of art ".
In September 1975 Engelbreit met social worker Phil Delano, and the couple married two
years later. Delano, his woman's greatest supporter. "Even if we did not
money that he never said, 'Go get a job, "she says." I can not express my gratitude for
his support. "
10 After that fateful trip to New York Engelbreit sent a sample of her drawings
two greeting-card companies. One bought three of her original drawings, and they
did occasional work for other, outlining a lot of whales, dragons, castles and
mythical animals. Then in 1980 the birth of her son added a new element to her
work. "Suddenly, everyday life seemed interesting," she says. Children,
pets, even "good old mother" began to show its cards. Her work was
"Pictures of the day life, the things that everyone experiences.
11 While eight months pregnant, in 1983, Engelbreit decided to start her own
company.
Within two years, her company produces nearly 100 different cards and the sale of
one million of them one year. In 1986, the copyright licensed to the maps

Her work off March 1 in many directions, it was perhaps inevitable that
Engelbreit would eventually realize her dream of illustrating a children's book.

What was the inspiration behind the name "Raggedy Ann?"?
answer if you know
Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, as she handed him an old handmade rag doll and he drew a face on. From his bookshelf, he pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, and combined the names of two poems, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Annie Orphant. "He said," Why do not we call her Raggedy Ann?
