The Great Christmas Barbie
My favorite Christmas memory was created when I was four years old. I recently discovered Barbie dolls and my sister at eight years old, was a Barbie fanatic. Our age difference meant we were rarely interested in the same toy at the same time, so our parents took full advantage of the opportunity to encourage us to play together. Hence the Great Barbie Christmas.
My sister, Val and I were accustomed to gifts from our parents as doll clothes and doll furniture homemade, with a few large items such as skates and baby doll from Santa. This particular Christmas was different. I have a soft, fluffy teddy bear from mother and father, but the majority of our gifts were associated with Barbie.
We were raised in the seventies, so this meant that Barbie was wearing wedge shoes and velvet suits. I imagine that walking in the Barbie aisle of Toys' R Us was probably more colorful and fun than the slightly nauseating, bubblegum pink and purple warm experience it is today. Our Barbies wore a lot of earth tones and primary colors, tones are much easier on the eyes.
Along with the Barbie dolls came to their furniture, and that was where the fun began. Then, the furniture were inflatable. Val and I had so much fun blowing up of the chairs, end, coffee tables and dining area. One thing that was missing was a clear home. As excited as we were, we were typical young children and so we wondered: "Where is the Barbie Dream Home?"
Looking back, I'm embarrassed four years by my old self. Our parents did not have much money as they were raising us, and as an adult and a parent I understand now how they must struggle to afford those gifts. This was by far the most extravagant Christmas we ever had and it was not cheap. My lack of gratitude to my mother hit particularly hard because she grew up in poverty and was so excited to us the things they could only dream about as a child.
Mother took it with good grace and true meaning of Christmas. Instead of letting those we had hurt her, she happily suggested that we go down and set up a "house" on the hearth near the stove. We reluctantly agreed and spent the rest of Christmas morning happy living quarters for our Barbies.
I learned two things that Christmas. One was that, without limiting the space to play a Barbie Dream Home would have imposed our imagination we could use much larger homes to create for our dolls. The other thing I learned is that karma fast. About three hours after I threw my tantrum on the Barbie house I stuck my tongue as part of our metal screened door. I spent the rest of Christmas Day with ice strapped to my tongue with a gauze.
