In the beginning …
For over 40 years I have collected and my passion started with my mother who had an antique shop in our home. I collected boxes, copper items, Snow Globes, African art, Native American Art and most recently little Spelter souvenir buildings.
If you are a collector, you're always a collector. Our collections can change with time and when we leave a collection in search of the next, we still have our eyes in the rear window looking for additions to the collections we left. But the age-old question has always been, when is a collection, and how we know.
As with any type of collection is that one "holy grail" you know what I mean … that one piece that would die tomorrow if you found a "happy camper". My latest holy grail was to find an authentic 1930's Chrysler Building souvenir. I could find all of the Empire State, Eiffel Towers and so many repro World Trade Centers, but the embodiment of Art Deco architecture, the Chrysler Building was not be found. Ever antique shop, flea market, flea market I went, I searched high and low in the hope that those little shiny silver "rush" from under the plastic would stabbing dolls, Tonka trucks, broken and dirty bedding … but it was not to be. I tried eBay, after seeing their TV ad in which hundreds of rare vintage Corvettes all on one street and I though I would definitely find that there is again no luck. Well I actually gave up and realized how much time I spent on something that apparently had alluded me was more than 8 years my salvation to the experience of being surrounded by a number of other pretty neat things.
I moved on, I started looking for 19C. Staffordshire Transfer Ware pottery in Mulberry and that had become my newest passion. I was mainly because I still had my fascination with the architecture I historic buildings and ruins wanted Asian Oriental Greco-Roman or detailing. So far I have not found my "holy grail" for this collection, but with time I'm sure it will be "ugly and cup "to increase.
Well years have passed since my Chrysler Building for and I really had given up hope of ever with my own. I saw a house in a magazine with a celebrity is not completely out of puberty and all I could think was "she really know what they did?" I really doubt.
In the end …
It was twelve years ago my search was on hold for the elusive Chrysler Building and I go through every day thinking about other things like birdhouses, watercolors and more. This past week, I've been a friend called me and said "look at my mailbox." Well, I took her literally walked to the box each the mail lady drive by and low and behold, a small brown cardboard box arrived today. I opened it and you guessed it … there it was. Not only was the exact Chrysler Building from the correct timing in the right Spelter material, but stamped on the base, in relief because it was the Chrysler Building, 1930 The world's tallest building. "Wow … Not Apart from being the "holy grail" but the Holy Grail tenfold as it was only 11 months later that the Empire State Building was surpassed in height.
Well there you have it … my "Holy Grail" story has a happy ending and it's really my hope that all your "Holy Grail" ending hunt.
