I am one of tens of thousands (probably hundreds of thousands) of Christians who deeply appreciate the recovery of alcoholism and addiction Alcoholics Anonymous possible in our life. Many of us have been criticized in which Jesus Christ and the Bible in our discussions at the meetings. But most of us know that God is our sufficiency. We pray to Him the name of Jesus Christ. And we recover.
Many of us who are Christians involved in AA believe in God, the performance of His Son Jesus Christ, and the truth about both that is found in the Bible. Many of us, as Christian members of Alcoholics Anonymous, had no idea that early AA was a Christian community that its members believed in God, surrendered to Jesus Christ, and studied the Bible on a daily basis. Many of us had no idea that the early, Christian-oriented AA general 75% successfully argued in the apparently hopeless, "medically-incurable," "Last gasp case" alcoholics who thoroughly followed the pioneer AA program. And many of us never learned that the original Akron program is summarized quite well in the on page 131 of the AA General Service Conference-approved book, DR. BOB and the Good Vintage.
How can so many of us are unaware of these facts?
The answer, in part, is that when the first edition of AA Big Book manuscript was written and edited in 1938 and early 1939, many additions, deletions and modifications were made to the Akron highly successful Christian program Bill W. and Dr. Bob began developing in the summer of 1935. For example, as Bill W. listed on pages 166-67 of the AA General Service Conference approved book Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age:
We [Bill W., Hank P., Ruth Hock, and John Henry Fitzhugh M.] still still arguing about the Twelve Steps. All this time I refused to deviate from these steps. I would not change a word of the original design, which you will recall, I had consistently used the word "God" and place the phrase "on our knees" was used. Pray God on his knees was still a huge insult to Henry. He argued that he begged, he threatened. He quoted Jimmy [B, ie, Jim Burwell] to him a backup. . . . Although I initially would have nothing, we finally started talking about the possibility of a compromise. . . . In step two, we decided to describe God as a "Power greater than ourselves. "In steps three and eleven we stopped the words" God as we understood Him. "From Step Seven, we removed the expression" our knees…. As the final concessions to those of little or no faith, it was the great contribution of our atheists and agnostics. [Emphasis added]
Bill W. 'S wife Lois was talking about another major change on page 113 of her autobiography, Lois remembers:
Finally was agreed that the book is to present a universal spiritual program, not specifically religious, since all drunks were not Christian.
Such major changes to the original Akron AA "Christian Fellowship" program obscured the simple solution of AA in Akron pioneers discovered, specifically, that a cured of alcoholism was available through the application of Almighty God, to come to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, and reading and studying the Bible together with the other principles and practices of the early days. [For the summary of the Original Frank Amos Akron AA "Program" and the other principles and practices of the Akron community, See Dick B. and Ken B., Dick B. The Christian Recovery Manual (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 2009), 44-46, 49.]
The lesson from the first three AAs
Knew each other early AAs. They visited each other. They address books phone number (if a Member State had a telephone) and addresses of other members. And they kept schedules showing the austerity and sobriety date history of the members.
The 75% overall success rate claimed early AA was remarkable because it was achieved by what Bill W. the seemingly hopeless, "medically-incurable," "Last gasp" cases who gave their all to God and receive the blessed healing and liberation that followed. Bill W. and Dr. Bob is indeed that "errors in the skate. "But there were no failures in abundance at the hardcore members who turn to God and the program gave everything they had.
A very important part of the historical record is how the first three AAs'm sober in late 1934 and 1935. When they sober:
There was no Big Book (Alcoholics Anonymous was published in April 1939);
There were no Twelve Steps;
There were no Twelve Traditions;
There were no "drunkalogs" and
There were no "to meetings, at least of the kind normally seen in AA today
The Creator of the heavens and Earth was there. See, for example, Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th ed.:
"My Creator" (page 13)
"My Creator "(76)
"Our Creator" (pages 25, 68, 72, 75, 83)
"A living Creator" (page 28);
"His Creator" (page 56, 80, 158)
"Their loving and omnipotent Creator" (page 161)
The "Great Physician, Jesus Christ, was there. See for example: Dick B., The Conversion of Bill W.: More on the role of the Creator in the early AA (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 2006), 59ff.
The Bible (Dr. Bob often the "Good Book") was there. See for example page 13 of the AA General Service Conference approved pamphlet, co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous (Item # P-53, available for reading online http://aa.org/pdf/products/p-53_theco-foundersofAA.pdf , Accessed 05/08/1909)
At that point our stories not just to speak of. When we started in on Bill D., we had no Twelve Steps, either: we had no Traditions.
But we were convinced that the answer to our problems was in the Good Book. For some of us older, the parts that we found it absolutely were necessary in the Sermon the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians and the Book of James.
AA Number One, Bill W., taught by Dr. SILKWORTH that Jesus Christ could heal him. Bill learned from his old drinking friend Ebby Thacher Ebby that had gone to the altar at Calvary Rescue Mission, and is reborn, so to Ebby told Bill God had done for him (Ebby) which are not themselves Ebby. Bill went to Calvary Church itself. Ebby He heard testimony from the pulpit, and Bill has decided that he needed help and had the same help that Ebby had received. Bill went to the altar at Calvary Rescue Mission, a decision for Christ, wrote that he was definitely born again, and then decided ask for help from the "Great Physician, Jesus Christ. Deeply depressed and desperate, Bill was drunk City hospital where he was greeted by Dr. SILKWORTH. On Cities Hospital Bill called for help, had a dramatic spiritual "white light" experience, experience that he was in the presence of the God of Scripture "(as Bill wrote on page 284 of The Language of the heart), and never drank again. Bill announced he never doubted the existence of God. And his message was: "The Lord healed me of this terrible disease and I just want to keep talking about and tell people. "(Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th ed., 191) No Big Book. No Twelve Steps. No Twelve Traditions. None drunkalogs. No meetings. Only the power and love of God that Bill had sought and relied upon.
AA Number Two, Dr. Bob S., – a Christian since his youth in St. Johnsbury, Vermont – prayed for the liberation of the carpet in the house of T. Henry Williams in Akron. Miraculously, help came quickly in the form of a visit by Bill W. to Akron. Henrietta Seiberling said Bill's visit to his "manna from heaven." Bill quickly moved in with Dr. Bob and his wife, studied the Bible with them, and nursed back from a Dr. Bob, short and last binge. Dr. Bob never drank again, and told the nurse at City Hospital, that he and Bill had a cure for alcoholism found. No Big Book. No Twelve Steps. No Twelve Traditions. None drunkalogs. No meetings. Only the power and love of God that Dr. Bob had requested and relied upon. Dr. Bob closed his story in the Big Book with these words:
Your heavenly Father will never let you down!
Bill W. and Dr. Bob sought to help another drunk. They found AA number three, the hospitalized Akron lawyer Bill D., also a Christian. After Bill D. heard what Bill W. and Dr. Bob had to share, Bill D. decided his life to trust God's care. Shortly, when Bill W. and Dr. Bob back to the hospital, Bill D. told them what had happened. Bill D. then left the hospital a free man and never drank again. He had told other drunks to seek help, and he did so. No Big Book. No Twelve Steps. No Twelve Traditions. None drunkalogs. No meetings. Only the power and love of God that Bill D. sought and relied upon. Bill D. was joining Bill W. 'S statement on page 191 of the fourth edition of Alcoholics Anonymous:
The Lord healed me of this terrible disease and I would just keep talking about it and telling people.
Bill D. cried Bill W. 'S explanation of the "Golden Text of AA" for him and for others.
What these three stories show us today
Three men! The first three AAs. All healed by the power of God never to drink!
What they did is hardly known by AAS and recovery workers today. I know because I have talked and written about it in front of the public throughout the United States and Canada in person, in books, in articles, emails, in phone calls, and on radio and television. But that's the message they seem hungry to hear.
These first three AAs recovered by the power of God. Because of their experience, others' seemingly hopeless, "medically-incurable," "last gasp case" alcoholics, who thoroughly followed the early Akron AA "Christian Fellowship" program path, were able to restore the power of God. But what I really hope that you, the reader will away from this discussion is that what happened in 1935 and the next three years can be done and done today.
Profiting Today the "Lessons Learned" by AA Pioneers
I am a supporter of AA me immediately when I recovered the rooms AA introduced in 1986 and since then have never relapsed. I had total relief from alcoholism and addiction. I credit the support I received in AA, the work I did in learning the program of recovery in the steps and others to help those steps, and complete devotion, I had the AA way. But I never doubted for a moment that God eventually receive the credit, just as he received the credit crisis from the mouths of the first three AAS Bill W., Dr. Bob S. and Bill D.
In a Christian in AA is plagued with violent comments from others about the Creator of the heavens and the earth, His Son Jesus Christ, the Bible, his faith or his church, he needs to stand . Solid recovery in the real factor that is available in AA today, just as it was available in the Christian Fellowship was founded in Akron in 1935 AA was founded on statements like this: God could and would if he was wanted. He can. He will. He does. He is available to any drinking or drug addict who wants to seek and obey Him. This was proven in 1935. It is evidence today among the Christians in recovery who choose to use his help. And his help-the help of the Creator of the heavens and the earth is at the ready in anticipation a call from those who believe. In the prisons, jails, psychiatric wards, hospitals, AA, NA and other Twelve Step fellowships, the military, veterans facilities, homeless shelters, treatment programs, rehabs, detoxifies and counseling offices. Everywhere! Everywhere and on everything!
