Agencies – one for each stage of life
Offices are a great unit in our lives, and not just a part of it. There is an office for almost every phase, we along the path through life. The preschool years are all of our Golden Age, an office seems to be something that we use and adapt to each unique situation we are in each phase.
It's amazing how kids furniture has developed what may seem a silly adaptation of the normal students desk for children as young as 2 or 3. These are usually made of plastic and come in a myriad of bright colors. These youngsters can learn to scribble and write and color on these agencies. Some have little horns and calling and other doo dads linked to them to continue to enjoy and entertain junior.
As the child grows a bit more and goes to school he was introduced in the wonderful world of private space defined by its own agency. It probably has at least one shelf where he put his crayons and paper. I remember how tickled I was the little desk I had in kindergarten. It was simple, but it was mine.
As we get older we look at the high school and beyond high school. This offices were always a kind of disappointment for me. I found the offices I had as a young student that had racks and even a lift top. The counters in high school were not really much more than a chair with an attached hinged surface. She had always felt too small, with barely enough room to open a textbook and notebook ready to put use. Go to school, the situation a bit. At least some of the classes have long rows of tables for students to use as a desk chair instead of those little desks.
After graduating from the agencies seem to grow, as if a kind of status symbol in our culture. Think large, executive, black walnut, fancy-schmancy. These bad guys tell the world that the man or woman behind the large and charged. They intimidate and they help to social order. If you have a large behemoth agency you must be important, right? I mean, look at what the humble workers in the office use. Barely enough space at all to work. When you add them in their little box with a folding screen or two, it definitely makes for a limited space. This is a far cry from the bosses office. I used to work for a man whose office actually had enough space not only for his enormous desk, but for a few chairs and a conference table. It was not cramped. Maybe he was more important after all. He thought that anyway.
Old age brings a reduction in all sorts of things. You see old people who have yard sales and making other liquidation efforts. They just do not need all that stuff. The agencies that use them tend to also shrink. Posed by the large agencies they once used as part of their business life, and enters a smaller, more practical option. These agencies may even be as simple as a TV tray for those who are bed ridden.
No matter what stage of life we find ourselves in, agencies are there to serve us faithfully.
