How to start a coin collection
Coin Collecting is affectionately known as the "hobby of Kings" in reference to the fact that in antiquity only Kings could afford to collect coins and laymen had spent every penny to survive.
Coin collecting or numismatics is a very popular hobby that is now affordable for everyone. You can explore the wonderful world of coin collecting as you read these words by simply reaching into your pocket and finding loose change. So what are the main steps needed to start a coin collection?
Step 1: Decide what you want to collect
You need to decide what kind of collection you want to build. There are many different types of coin collecting themes. These include;
Country Collections
– Some collectors to obtain a sample from each country, while others focus on one country
Spring Collections
– Many collectors collect annual Lincoln such a percentage for each year from 1909 to present
Character Coin Collections
– Different currency symbols can provide adequate differentiation for several years to collect specimens for each
Type Collections
– A collection can include major design variants for a period of time in a given country
Subject Collections
– Many collectors collect coins, that an area of personal interest eg aircraft, ships, etc. Other categories include collections shows, collection period, the composition of collections, collecting signatures, series collections, print collections value, volume collections and more.
Step 2: Inform yourself on your selection
It is very important to educate yourself sufficiently. Join your local numismatic club, contact your local coin dealer and they are a good source from which you can learn about the hobby to ask. This knowledge is vital so you can appreciate what you should consider when buying a coin, the coin and how to evaluate. An excellent resource is the American Association Numismatic. This association will provide useful information about the bodies to promote coin collecting. Visit your local library or Amazon.com and get books on numismatics.
Step 3: Complete a set of
Complete a set. Collect one of each year and mint mark coin of your choice. (A mintmark tells you where the coin was created.)
Step 4: Subscribe to the Official Coin
Subscribe to coin publications such as "Coin World" or "Coinage Act Magazine. "These publications will keep you informed of developments and ensure that you make more informed decisions.
Step 5: Get an Collectors View Album
Pick-up display a collector's album or folder to be proud to show off your new found hobby. Other useful materials include coin collecting, coin capsules, coin magnifiers, coin envelopes, coin trays, coin bags and coin trays.
Step 6: Take part in online discussions may be the quickest way to collect coins to learn by mixing with experienced coin collectors online. Join some of the top coin collecting forums and ask questions. You'll be pleased to discover that so many experienced coin collectors are very happy to share their knowledge with you.
Visit many of these coin collectors blogs and subscribe to the RSS feeds. This will lead to frequent coin collecting news and tips sent to you.
