Do not waste your time setting fitness goals
Ideas from the corporate world seem to be filtering in the health and fitness world. One example is the advice that we are nourished by books and trainers' goal setting. " We are bombarded with messages to "write your goals and then to make them SMART ("Specific", "measurable," "achievable," "Realistic" and "time related") – or something to that effect.
I think that ideas like this are good in certain contexts. They are certainly working in business and other environments. But I can not help thinking it a waste of time when it comes to exercise. In fact, I will go so far as to say that I believe most of the popular "motivational stuff" such as visualization, affirmations and even goal-setting itself – is a waste of time. At best, it's overrated.
When I transform my body, I have a tremendous amount of research, and that meant reading of many books on sports, health, fitness, nutrition and self-improvement. And I mean a lot! I am grateful that I am a speed reader, it's a very valuable skill to have. Anyway, I noticed that the books I thought least of all were the ones who gave me a lot of homework at the start. A diet book that I wanted a week to write down what I ate before I even got to the diet plan to start. A self-help book that I wanted to spend the week writing down and analyzing my thoughts and feelings, and heaven knows what else. A workbook and advised me to write an auditor "I radiate health and happiness!" on a card each day and them around with me.
I wanted not one of these, I just wanted to get started!
Maybe for some people, this kind of preparation may be useful. But for many – myself included – it is a good way to get trapped in what is known as paralysis by analysis: endless research, analysis and planning things, but never, you know, it does. I bet that most books like this eventually gathering dust on a shelf, or sold on eBay, who have never read beyond the first or second chapter.
The idea behind all conventional fitness goal-setting and motivation stuff seems to be that we need to be good, and motivated. That we lack desire and that we need a way to force us to find ourselves. Personally I think that is nonsense. You can read this article because you wanted to look and feel younger, become more attractive or a better quality of life. Whatever. The point is, I'm sure you already know what you want. You do not need to spend days writing it down and analyze the hell of it! And you do not walk around repeating mantras for yourself.
So is this article saying that I am against having goals? Not at all. But just do not go overboard. Not Get Smart, Get Smart. Just someone to show you have a good program and start it! That's all the goal setting that you need to do. The rest will take care of themselves.
