Detroit Travel: The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel – legendary luxury is reborn
One of the main reasons I had come to Detroit was the amazing architecture this city has to offer. Detroit celebrates its heyday in the early 20th century when the automobile industry took off, and car ownership became available to ordinary people. Witnesses of this tree are the many beautiful historic skyscrapers in Detroit, especially from the year 1920, buildings that still define one of the most recognizable skylines in the world.
Of course the Great Depression of the 1930s brought an end to this exuberant construction activities, but to this day Detroit has a large collection of architectural treasures. One of the most famous attractions is the former Book Cadillac Hotel, which opened its doors in 1924 the tallest building in Detroit and tallest hotel in the world.
The book is designed Cadillac by three brothers who intended to Washington Boulevard into the "Fifth Avenue of the West". She commissioned prominent Detroit architect Louis Kamper to their hotel that had good be built on the site design on the old Cadillac Hotel, a building dating from 1885. With great fanfare, this grand hotel opened in 1924, with 1,136 state-of-the-art rooms. The Book Cadillac Hotel was Detroit's most revered luxury hotel and property for many years. The first five floors of the original book Cadillac had three ballrooms, a spacious lobby and shops the ground floor. Even a radio station was located on the top floor.
Finally in 1931, caused by the financial crisis of the Great Depression, the Book of Brothers lost control of this property, and it was then administered by the National Hotel Management Company. In May of 1939 of Lou Gehrig, the New York Yankees' famous first baseman, broke down the grand staircase of the hotel. He took himself out of the lineup that ended up breaking his string of 2,130 consecutive games played. Later, of course, was he was diagnosed with ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The script for Frank Capra's 1947 film "State of the Union ", starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, made several references to the Book Cadillac. Although filmed on a movie set, a shot of the actual main entrance marquee of the hotel appeared in the film. Over the years many other celebrities stayed at the hotel, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, Ronald Reagan and Herbert Hoover all night in this historic building. Dr. Martin Luther King spent a night here in 1968, shortly before he was murdered.
From the year 1950 the Book Cadillac was owned by the Sheraton chain, which eventually sold the hotel in 1975. This era was particularly unkind to this historic property such as furniture and paint schemes were changed and the grand marble staircase was torn and replaced by an escalator. The hotel has a changed name to the Sheraton as the Book Cadillac Brothers' name disappeared altogether.
After the 1967 Detroit riots, tourism declined in the city and many businesses closed. Many Detroit Grand historic hotels can not survive and were shutters. This sad fate befell the Fort Shelby Hotel, the Hotel Statler and the Hotel Tuller. The Cadillac has a short call, because it ended with a number of chandeliers and other pieces from the Statler Hotel. The cult film "Detroit 9000", made in 1974, emphasizes this era of the hotel.
Sheraton eventually sold the hotel to Herbert Weissberg, a prominent New York hotel owner, who renamed it the Cadillac Detroit. After his exclusion from the ownership changed hands at the Radisson chain, which also implemented a number of unsuccessful renovations. After a number of additional revenue, the hotel was transformed into a mixed use property during the year 1980 that included office space. In 1984 finally closed its doors for renovations, but not reopen as planned due to economic problems. Almost the entire contents of the hotel were sold at fire-sale prices, including original Book Cadillac China, beds, bedding and other items.
As a matter of fact, the Book Cadillac was an abandoned property and eventually fell victim to vandalism and urban scavengers. Initially, a guard protected the property from 1986 to 1997 but when the guard was removed, the formerly beautiful hotel was destroyed, and many of the architectural details were stolen or destroyed. Graffiti was sprayed throughout the building, the historic plaster and destroyed the entire interior was a mess.
The historic Book Cadillac The grande dame of Detroit, is a former shadow of himself to the Cleveland-based Ferchill Group decided to renovate this historic hotel and from top to bottom. With costs about $ 200 million, the historic Westin Book Cadillac Hotel has become the quality that features 67 condominium residences on the upper floors. The Westin Book Cadillac reopened its doors in early October of 2008 and a grand opening gala on October 25, 2008 to officially celebrate the restoration of this historic landmark hotel. I was absolutely lucky to witness this beautiful architectural renaissance just a few days after it became known to the public.
On this sunny Monday morning I met with John Timko, the sales manager of the hotel, our tour began with a trip to the roof of the hotel. Work crews were still working at the highest level of luxury condos that gave us a chance to go out on the roof of the hotel. 31 stories and without any protective railings, this was a somewhat terrifying yet exhilarating experience.
I was fascinated by the ziggurats, the Hotel crowning touch, fully restored with new copper cladding, since the original copper pieces had been stolen. The view of downtown Detroit and the Detroit River with Windsor on the other side of the Ambassador Bridge was just breathtaking. Even more amazing is that once the apartments are completed, no further access to the roof. I counted I really lucky to the roof of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel experienced.
John continued to tour the historic ballroom level that includes three ballrooms, including the Venetian Ballroom, which was back restored to its 1924 glory, the true pride and joy of this property. Italian Garden Room and the Crystal Ballroom round of the historic meeting spaces that at this level. We had a look at some great venues like the Executive Center on the 19th floor. The Westin Executive Club floor with the concierge lounge for guest use and offers a beautiful view. The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel certainly offers everything a business or leisure traveler could ever want.
We also had a look at the Boulevard Room restaurant on the second floor, which will be assisted by a "Roast", a restaurant run by renowned chef Michael Symon cook. The Motor Bar at the second level features cocktails and snacks In a beautifully restored lounge with high ceilings. Another restaurant, 24grille, opens at the end of January 2009, and WBC Grab & Go coffeeshop, partly due to open in January, a relaxed atmosphere of a bistro to offer.
After a visit to the great brand-new Woodward Ballroom that can be divided into three segments, we had a sneak look at the almost completed the exercise and swimming. Only the most modern fitness equipment waiting for exercise-hungry guests. We ended our tour with a view of the facade of the hotel Washington Boulevard, the grandeur of this art deco beauty shows. Then we lead in the Boulevard Room restaurant with a delicious sampling of dishes prepared by the expert chefs at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel.
The framework of the Westin Hotel & Resorts brand, has The historic Book Cadillac Hotel has been completely resurrected in all its glory, successfully combining a tasteful historical restoration with modern 21st century amenities. The two nights I spent at the hotel made me appreciate the ideal location of this monumental building, you can view all of downtown Detroit attractions by foot.
The Westin Book Cadillac is a great example of the transformations that Detroit and many of its buildings have experienced over the past. Despite turbulent economic history of Detroit and challenges, the restoration of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel is one of the greatest examples of successful preservation and rejuvenation throughout the United States. Now the grande dame of Detroit has returned to stately hotels Washington Boulevard.
