Something I said – Sophia Shorai and Tommy Barbarella make mediocre music

As long as you live by the traditional jazz stylists Sophia Shorai singer and pianist Tommy Barbarella is a pleasant if unremarkable listening experience. For example, if you're throwing a dinner party where you want to have a comfortable background without people cutting each other off in the middle of a conversation asking, "Who is that?" This perfectly fits the bill.
As long you live the concept of a dozen songs with different origins from Hank Williams to Leonard Cohen Horace Silver on Stevie Wonder with a theme. "The thread" Shorai says Sophia, "examines the struggle of the human condition. The album takes the listener through stories of loss, longing, political unrest, sadness, then, at last rest and recovery. "Laudable sentiment and an interesting idea, but the artistry of Shorai is immature and Barbarella, who has played with the likes of Prince, Chaka Khan, Art Garfunkel, can not carry her. Had she owns more herbs or, for that matter, more feeling and less cliched technology would more than run-of-the-mill fare. As it is, though, you generally weak performances of strong material. Wonder's "Big Brother" strands Shorai hopelessly out of her depth, there is a reason not too many singers cover Stevie Wonder. After all, how can this guy melodies interpret, at least as interesting a way as the original. – The idea is actually more interesting Shorai Sophia's interpretation is lukewarm Fully redundant Williams .. "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", in paint-by-numbers fashion, alludes to the blues, including all appropriate notes on the right places, but that's about it. The title cut by Oscar Brown, Jr., gets a pedestrian read that almost stiff.
Tommy Barbarella plays the piano beautifully. Inspired, in fact. While Sophia Shorai wash Coy forced finesse rather than a natural feeling. "Living as long as you", praise the press release, "is a collection of standards, old and new, made in one of the simplest scheme possible:. a piano and a voice In a time when modern recordings often are multiple tracks and studio wizardry, behind an elusive perfection saturated, Sophia and Tommy set put back to a reserve which for aesthetic nuance and emotional complexity. "Wherein lies the proverbial rub. The format is, anything it wants. Sophia Shorai simply do not have the chops.
As long as you live is listenable. The is just not very remarkable.
