Grouse Mountain
History
Original ski
Grouse Mountain the first lodge was hand built by Scandinavians in the year 1920. They pulled shelves on what would become the Grouse Grind trail for the company. Another company wanted to build a cable car for a private resort on the mountain, but that venture never materialized. Through the years 1930, a toll road was built to the summit via the slope of what is now the primary ski mountain, the "Cut", to access the lodge.
The area at the bottom of the "Cut" one of Vancouver's most famous ski slopes is the original base of the mountain, where the area's first lodge and tug were built. The base was known as the "Village" to local skiers, because many huts were built in the trees around the lodge and the base of the old Cut chairlift. Some of these cabins still exist and they are below and west of the old Cut chairlift. The unpaved road that was built on the base, the Old Grouse Mountain Highway access, still exists and is currently only used for preservation of the resort.
In 1949, the mountain the first double chairlift was built that skiing down the cut on the top of the ridge. Grouse Mountain claims this elevator to the world's first double chair lift, however, it was actually the second chairlift in Vancouver after the Holly Burn "at Cypress Bowl and third in Canada's Red Mountain, the first chair in the world was in Sun Valley in 1936. Two years later, in 1951, another long one elevator that runs from a bus stop on Skyline Drive, at the bottom of the mountain, was opened, known as the Village President. These included wooden double chair lift towers (some of these towers and the lift line cable wheels are still visible a walk following the Village Chair lift line). Each of the chairs were for a time, equipped with a metal roof for skiers to keep dry on a rainy or snowy days During the ride to the foot of the old Cut chairlift.
Plane Crash
On February 12, 1954, the U.S. Air Force F-86 Sabre aircraft entered Canadian airspace from the state Washington and promptly collided with the southern slopes of Grouse Mountain near one of the old chair lifts, scattering debris around a wide area. The pilot, Second Lieutenant J. Lamar Barlow, died still strapped in his chair.
Contemporary lodge and ski
After a fire destroyed the original lodge in the winter of 1964, the two original lifts removed in the year 1970. The Government of British Columbia, seeing the potential for tourism, provided funding and permits for a new lodge building on the hillside, and an aerial tram travel in the peak of the valley below. The tram, known as the Blue Tram, was built by the Austrian steel company Voest Alpine and was opened and inaugurated on December 15, 1966, by Premier W. AC Bennett. Ten years later, bought the mountain from the original owners by the McLaughlin family in 1976. The new owner has additional funding for the construction of half aerial tramway, known as the Red or Super Skyride tram, the same year.
The new ski resort and recommended the peak Blueberry chairs, both built in the years 1960 and early 1970, while the extra Inferno president was built in 1976. With only partial ownership of the mountain, the McLaughlin family acquired full ownership in 1989 and was transferred Canada to build the first high-definition theater, called The Theatre in the Sky, in 1990 by extending the existing lodge.
As the Inferno, Blueberry and Peak Chair began age in the year 2000, all three elevators were removed because of insurance, beginning with the end of 2003 and the Blueberry Inferno Peak and the following year. All three were actually Grouse Mountain is replaced by the second high-speed detachable quad chair built by North American aerial lift manufacturer Leitner-Poma for 2005 winter season. (The first was the Screaming Eagle the Cut.) The chair was named the Olympic Express, instead of the recent appointment of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. During the Games, will broadcast NBC Today coverage of the matches live from Grouse Mountain.
In 2008, Grouse Mountain built two new quad chairs, one to replace the Courtesy rope tow at the bottom of the Paradise run and the other on the defunct Peak chair, which closed after the Olympic Express replacement was built in 2004. Both chair lifts are designed to run at a lower speed for beginners and children.
Winter activities
Ski and Snowboard
Ü ski and snowboard area on the southern slope of the mountain, is active in the winter months between December and May, approximately. Accessible through the base of the gondola to the mountaintop chalet lodge has four chair lifts (two high-speed quads, the Screaming Eagle and Olympic Express and two quads, the greenway and Peak Chair) facilitating 26 runs which half are lit for night skiing and snowboarding.
The most prominent walking on the mountain, the Cut, one of the two beginner runs, which is easily visible from the Vancouver area. It runs along the Screaming Eagle chairlift. East of the cut are different intermediate runs, skiers and snowboarders who take them to the Olympic Express access to the eastern mountain expert runs, most of which are from 4100-foot the mountain peak. In total, Grouse Mountain has three green (beginner), 15 blue (intermediate), six black diamond (advanced) and two double black diamond (expert) is performed. There are also three freestyle terrain parks the novice to intermediate Rookie Terrain Parks and Paradise Jib, and the intermediate to expert Quiksilver Terrain Park.
Grouse Mountain is also home to the Tyee Ski Club, an organization for training children and youth to be competitive alpine ski racers in slalom, giant slalom and super giant slalom skiing. The club also has a snowboarding program for newer racers.
In addition to the 305 inches of annual natural snowfall, the mountain uses 37 snow cannons, that 75% of the ski and snowboard terrain for snow. With the capacity to the snow season in the spring and extend the account for fluctuations in weather, the mountain invested In a self-reported $ 7 million in snowmaking in over a decade the mid-year 1990 and 2000.
Snowshoes
The Munday Alpine Snowshoe Park includes four major groomed snowshoeing trails the beginner-intermediate and three Blue Grouse Loop trails circling Dam Mountain and Thunder Bird Ridge.

Adjacent to the mountain chalet and lodge is a 8,000 square meter outdoor ice rink.

A height profile of the trail
Grouse Mountain is also the location of a very popular trail known as the Grouse Grind. It is a very steep and mountainous trail that climbs 853 m (2799 ft) over a distance of 2.9 km (2 mi), with an average mark of 30 degrees. The course, nicknamed "Mother Nature's Stairmaster", is notoriously laborious because of the steepness and mountainous terrain. Hikers who are either time on the trail, reach the top in about 90 minutes on average, though some who are very fit can finish in 45 minutes.
Thurs McPherson and Phil Severy built the Grind in the early 1980s, uninvited by regional district or the owners of Grouse Mountain.
As of September 2009 are the fastest officially recorded climbs: (Note: The unofficial record at the Grind Trail only, while a little extra distance to the finish for the unofficial event The Grind Mountain Run record. was well timed, but on a shorter course.)

Sebastian Albrecht Vancouver holds the record for most grinds closed in a period of 24 hours, has made the climb 13 times on June 22, 2009.
The difficulty of course is often underestimated. North Shore Rescue carries numerous rescues of hikers each year who collapse on the Grouse Grind, or start too late in the evening and be prepared to make their way into the dark to find.

Trivia
Grouse Mountain and its cable car was in for the fictitious "Skyland Mountain" in the Blue Ridge of Virginia, in 1994 an episode of TV show The X-Files that Dana Scully is kidnapped on the top of the mountain. The X-Files was filmed in the Vancouver region for the first five years.
The ski and facilities were also used in the filming of the modern adaptation of the popular cartoon Mr. Magoo
