If the shoe fits, wear it
It occurred to me the other day when my son was putting on his spikes to kick the football around in the garden it was time for new spikes. Ugh! Taking my son shopping for shoes or anything for that matter, sends a shiver down my spine. Do not get me wrong … I love new shoes! But we do not talk posh pumps or sandals cute 'cuz we're not talking about my shoes.
We are not referring to a child may still long enough to try to sit on several pairs to one that fits best. My son's idea of making a shoe fits certainly be carried out around the store with the shoes and if they do not fly away or hurt his toes, then the "fit". Not very scientific and not entirely accurate, according to Dr. Carol Frey, Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at UCLA and Chief of foot and ankle surgery at West Coast Sports Performance in Manhattan Beach, CA.
Dr. Frey suggests the following to the parents when their children shopping for shoes:
- Shop at the end of the day – or after a sporting event if your child's feet in their largest
- Measure both feet, stand up – as they will be provided with their full weight. Measure both feet in the case differs from the others in size and if so, choose the shoes that the larger base fit.
- Measure and fit with sport-specific socks, your child wear the socks they will wear with the shoes.
- Allow for flexibility – A half-inch from the end of the longest toe to the end of the shoe so that your child is capable of movement All toes. Unlike popular belief, do not press your thumb on the largest toe because it allows your child to reflex and curl the toes making the false impression that there is sufficient space. The length of the shoes must be greater than the length of the foot of your child with at least 10 millimeters to enough room for all the toes as possible.
- Lace shoes fit – For maximum support, use the top eyelet on the shoe laces and be careful not too tightly, as this can cause damage to the nerves and tendons on the top of the foot attached.
- Check for proper heel – Once the heels are not tight, they will slide up the shoe to create a larger chance for blisters.
- Let your child walk in the shoes – while still in the store and tell how the shoes feel. If the shoes are removed, check feet for any redness or signs of irritation, check shoes for extra material, glue or stitching irregular, which can cause irritation.
- Expect immediately Comf ort – shoes should not be "broken" to fit. They should be comfortable immediately.
Poorly fitting shoes can lead to problems now and down the road. Besides the sporting performance they can also cause blisters, curling of the toes, bunions, corns, calluses, pinched nerves, and ingrown toenails. And since I started this story about shopping for cleats Dr. Frey suggests that players ages 9-13 wear shoes with cleats on the heels of several pressure and relieve pain in this part of the foot. In addition, look for shorter-cleats not more than a half inch-long to help reduce knee and ankle injuries. Any tips on making a pair of shoes that fit better a bit too wide?
