Roller Derby Girls Helping the Community
Despite a strong wind that threatened to carry away our check-in tents, we YWCA staff and volunteers helped set up of the shoe drive, where the male participants would be able to choose shoes for women with the right color, style and fit for their walk. SJSU athletes from San Jose firefighters, police and EMT, had these girls walking SVRG help them mules, pumps and stilettos to select their sizes. We also equipped them with event tees in the case their flashy heels do not give them away as YWCA supporters.
When it came time for the walk to begin, we took our skates and moved into the semi- Our point YWCA miles coordinators linked us perfectly with our next role. provision of water and patches to the participants. After all, who more than blisters on roller girls know? We distributed water to the walkers, some advanced and some stumbling, and cheered them on as they passed us.
Once the crowd beyond our station, grabbed We followed the high heels and hikers to the California Theater in downtown San Jose, where the participants and sponsors were rewarded with prizes for fundraising and a drink.
Overall it was an amazing 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 fun and light-hearted way to raise community awareness for some very serious problems. Next year we hope to cheer on our own male SVRG referees to complete their first mile in our shoes.

Silicon Valley Roller Girls (SVRG) is an all-female flat track roller derby league founded in 2007 and represents what is known as Silicon Valley, California. SVRG wants to do a extra exciting sport to the communities of Silicon Valley and allows women from all walks of life an opportunity to showcase their athleticism, intelligence, personality, inner beauty and power through participating in the subculture phenomenon of roller derby. SVRG is totally skater run. Its dedicated members representing Silicon Valley mothers, professionals and students. SVRG promotes competition from other leagues and strives to represent the Silicon Valley with athleticism and excitement.
About the Author
We aim to empower our skaters to not only build their skating ability through challenging training and teamwork but also to be involved the operation of the league. We also dedicate ourselves and our efforts to reaching out and bettering the Silicon Valley by participating in community service.
2008 marks SVRG’s first season of bouting against other leagues. This year, in addition to increasing our numbers and creating 2 or 3 distinct teams of our own, we hope to achieve our accreditation from WFTDA, the women’s flat track derby association.
