Hockey Notes – The first true All-Star Game
In a discussion on the origin of today's annual All-Star Game, a number of hockey historians point to the 1934 Ace Bailey benefit game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the rest of the stars of the NHL. Others trace the All-Star tradition back to the first "official" contest in 1947, when the stars of the NHL duked it out with the Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs. But the first hockey game ever to watch an All-Star format pre-dates the NHL. On January 2, 1908, was a benefit game held in honor of the Montreal Wanderers' former star point cover Hodgson "Hod" Stuart.
Stuart was one of the finer athletes ever out of Canada. He played hockey in, lacrosse, soccer and athletics. In hockey, he was a superlative defender. He skated, set seemingly impossible plays, rushed, was cold and hard as steel. Unfortunately he drowned near Belleville, Ontario in the summer of 1907, just months after leading Montreal Wanderers for the Stanley Cup title. Before the start of the 1908 Eastern Canadian Amateur Hockey Association season, Ed Sheppard and William Northey of Westmount Arena came up with the idea of holding an advantage, with the proceeds goes to Stuart's widow. The game was played in the Arena, former home of the Montreal Wanderers and would play with stars selected from the rest of the league.

Smaill was filling in on cover-point for Wanderers' Bruce Stuart, you fucked a game from the west. On the competition side, Patrick was responsible for Jack Laviolette. Patrick, the former McGill University team captain, was given a uniform to wear the Montreal Victorias.
By game time, there were about 4,000 fans rocking the Westmount Arena rafters. The yield the game was expected to hit the $ 2,000 mark.
The first half belonged to the Wanderers. The stars looked out of sync, completely unknown to each other. Emerged in many tangles and rushes that have resulted in scoring chances were broken. On the other hand, Montreal forward line was firing on all cylinders. Their skating was strong and their attacks were ever so clever. Patrick opened the scoring five minutes in on a great rush from deep in his own end. This goal seemed to set the tone and took up the Wanderers 7-1 lead in the break. The only penalties handed out in the first half were Patrick and glass for their part in a bee punches behind the Montreal goal. She would be the only offenses in the entire game.
If the All-Stars in line to start the second half, with Jack Marshall Grover Sargent places on the front line, a move that seemed to work miracles. The league fixtures played hard, aggressive hockey, they crept back as if a gun to their head. Kennedy collected the first goal of the second half – the first of five in a row for the All-Stars – And the Wanderers fell back on their heels. Marshall's tally to 26-minute mark made the score 7-6 and brought the crowd to its feet. At this point the Wanderers resolved to tighten the bolts and a four minutes span, Blachford bags are second and third goals of the night. The W's came out on top by a gaudy 10-7 count.
Referees Bob Meldrum and Tom Melville had an easy time handling the event. Offsides were rare and both teams played decent hockey. Apart from the glass-Patrick pushing match, there was no Monkey Business.
The Hod Stuart took advantage of just over $ 2,100 for the widow of Stuart. Warm wishes were extended to the players and the Westmount Arena staff, who the ice free loan, and Ed Sheppard and William Northey for their "diligence in organizing and carrying out all details regarding the game."
