Christmas Celebrations in Southern Hemisphere
Christmas is celebrated in many parts of the world on December 25. But different religious communities have different opinions about the Christmas date. Protestant and Roman Catholic churches hold Christmas Day services on 25 December. The Eastern churches – the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Russian Orthodox Church and the Armenian Church – celebrate Christmas on 6 or 7 January. Although the various celebrations, there are rituals, celebrations and parties at this time of year for thousands of years.
Christmas trees are part of a long tradition of green taken in the house at Christmas to brighten the dull winter. Mistletoe was popular with Druid priests, because it stayed green all winter. Holly posted over the doorway was believed to drive away evil. Placing branches from trees in the house was first recorded in 1494, and by early 1600 there are reports of pine trees decorated with apples. There are many Australian native plants in bloom during the Christmas period. Some of these are known as Christmas plants in different parts of the country, including Christmas Bells, Christmas orchid.
But Christmas in the southern hemisphere is different from the northern area. The heat of early summer Australia has an impact on how Australians celebrate Christmas
In the weeks leading up to Christmas houses are decorated, send greeting cards, carols singing, Christmas trees installed in homes, schools and public spaces, children and joy in anticipating a visit from Santa Claus. On Christmas Day family and friends to exchange gifts and enjoy special Christmas food.
Many Australians Christmas out the door, heading to camp for a longer break during the Christmas holiday period. It has become tradition that the international crowd in Sydney at Christmas time to go to Bondi Beach, where up to 40,000 people visit on Christmas Day.
When Europeans first arrived in Australia they were delighted that they could wildflowers resembling bells and bright green leaves covered with red or white flowers to use as Christmas decorations to pick. This was a big contrast with the bare trees and dormant gardens they had left behind in Europe. Modern Indigenous Christmas celebrations start to include elements of traditional indigenous culture.
