A Proud Icon of freedom and liberty
Located on a 12 acre island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship of the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a national monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
Today is the statue of Liberty has become the icon that America represents in the minds and hearts of many tourists. It is a typical symbol of freedom and liberation from oppression and represents all the good things about the United States. It is said that the statue location in New York Harbor was such that it would be a sign of welcome to all those entering the Land of the free and the U.S., including tourists, immigrants and returning American expatriates.
The Statue of Liberty classical appearance is derived from Libertas, ancient Rome, the goddess of freedom from slavery, oppression and tyranny. Her raised right foot is on the move. This symbol of freedom and liberty is not standing still or focus in the harbor, she is ahead, as her left foot tramples broken shackles at her feet, in symbolism the U.S. desire to be free from oppression and tyranny. The seven spikes on the crown represent the seven seas and seven continents. Her torch lighting means. The tablet in her hand represents knowledge and shows the date of the birth of the nation, July 4, 1776.
Visitors to Liberty Island by ferry to travel to New York City Harbor. They are usually allowed to climb the statue from the inside, with the narrow circular staircase that visitors can only walk in a single file. Most visitors right up to the crown of the statue from where they inspiring, and breathtaking views of New York City across the harbor.
