Afro-Americans in Sport and the absent father
Much has recently been the lack or degradation of the Afro-Americans in sports like baseball, lacrosse, golf, football made, swimming and hockey and the dominance of African Americans in sports like basketball, football, and track.
There are almost as many theories and explanations as there are experts. It is said that African-Americans focus on sports that can be played in densely populated urban areas, which do not require large initial investments, and that are largely supported by existing public school budgets.
The Philadelphia Inquirer came out with something new in August 1, 2009 Article about African American interest for the Phillies and baseball in general in the wake of the Phillies' 2008 World Series title and the team participating in Town activities designed to interest in baseball increasing. "Baseball is usually something you do with your father," the paper asked. "The inner city children, the fathers are not around."
Absentee fathers are a focal point in the African-American community for decades, and the situation is often stressed in public by community leaders, including President Obama, who claim that many African-American adult males are shirking family responsibilities by the absence of the house. This is the first time we've seen the situation formulated in terms of having a gap with father ala the movie Field of Dreams.
One can certainly make the case that golf and baseball in particular, introduced sports for a son or daughter by his or her father. Father would usually have the club membership is required to get started in golf, and middle-aged men are most likely due to give to baseball lore, take their child to a game, play catch, and encourage rooting for "our team."
According to a 2000 report from the U.S. Census Bureau, 65 percent (or nearly two thirds) of African-American children grow up without a father at home. It is easy to imagine these children drifting into more solitary activities such as shooting baskets or running around a track at best, or fall into the wrong crowd at worst.
The pattern also applies when it comes to equipment. Baseball Gloves and bats, lacrosse sticks, golf clubs and hockey gear are expensive, as private coaching and ice time. Basketball hoops, on the other hand, are at almost every school and public park, So if you have a ball and a pair of sneakers you've been in business. Revolves around a track requires a smaller investment. Traditionally strong among African-American sports football only require one large upfront equipment expenses, and the greatest of these is handled by the public schools.
Another factor is the attendance at matches and are immersed in a sport. According to the Inquirer: "A working mother of four can not afford to take her children (at the stadium.)" Single mothers, especially in the Afro-American community, country club memberships usually have not had the time to drive to the rink, and often lack exposure to the relatively new American mainstream sports such as soccer and lacrosse.
Although there are consequences for African Americans in sports, then presidential candidate Barrack Obama said in a speech in June 2008 absent African American paternity problems run much deeper. "Too many (African American) fathers are MIA, too many fathers are AWOL, missing too many lives and too many homes," Obama said. "They have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men. And the foundations of our families are weaker because of it.
"We need (African American) fathers to realize that responsibility does not just end at conception. That does not just make you a father. What makes you a man is not a child's ability to to get. Any fool can have a child. That does not mean your father. It is the courage that a child makes you a father to raise. "
That courage involves passing family traditions, such as sports. Every African American should know the story of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball color line with the Brooklyn Dodgers and must understand how difficult a game of baseball is to play well to appreciate Robinson's journey. With fathers in the home, African-American children are also more likely to trails blazed by Tiger Woods, Jozy Altidore, James Stewart, the Williams sisters and Mike Grier follow. Afro-Americans in the sport will be richer for.
