Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery – rediscover humanity
Plymouth – a city enriched with charismatic, proud heritage and history – is based in Devon County southwest of England. And its center – Drake Circus – is a shoppers' delight, with merchandise bearing the names of the British best of the best brands. It is in this thriving area that Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery lives.
With the money donated by Scottish Andrew Carnegie, this museum was built by Thornely and Rooke, the Edwardian Baroque style. After the devastation caused by "The Blitz" of the museum interior was renovated in 1954.
Inaugurated in 1910, the museum offers a fascinating repository consists of more than 150,000 natural history specimens, numerous prehistoric artifacts from the Bronze Age, 750 paintings, more than 3,000 drawings and watercolors, about 7000 a large number of fine prints and sculptures. This mammoth collection is divided into genres including visual arts, decorative arts, human history (archeology and culture of the world) and natural history.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Monday, Saturday and holidays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Access is free for everyone. There are 10 permanent galleries, such as "Bringing the World to Plymouth ',' Ancient Egypt ',' Uncovered ',' Plymouth: port and place "and" Discover Nature "nestled in the ground floor whilst the first floor houses' Atrium Gallery," "Artists St Ives and the South West ',' Beryl Cook Tribute Wall, "" The China Connection "and" The Cottonian Collection.
The famous Cottonian Collection was acquired by the museum in 1916. It was originally owned by William Cotton and his death was kept in the pharmaceutical Library since 1863. The collection features popular local artists and works, Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), James Northcote (1746-1831), Samuel Prout (1783-1852), Charles Locke Eastlake (1836-1906) and Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1746).
The museum hosts many educational events and workshops for all ages, along with research facilities in addition to providing various services for people with disabilities.
