Development
Production
Tales of Monkey Island was developed by Telltale Games, under license from LucasArts. The game marks the first collaboration between the two companies, Telltale Games was formed by former LucasArts members in the wake of the cancellation of Sam & Max: Freelance Police in 2004, and LucasArts was found to have moved away from the adventure game genre. While Telltale Games was a Monkey Island game since the founding of the company is considering, Telltale's design director Dave Grossman credits the start of Tales as the correct alignment of stakeholders, including the then new president of LucasArts Darrell Rodriguez, for helping to champion the cause of LucasArts adventure games inside. Mark Darin, co-designer and writer on the project, attributes this revival to the emergence of digital distribution the video game industry, allowing for companies like Telltale develop "something other than the endless clones of popular games" while reducing the element of the financial risks.
Announced by LucasArts in a joint press release at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June 2009, the game counterparts enhanced remake of The Secret of Monkey Island, developed by LucasArts. The game trailer was unveiled at the convention. Tales of Monkey Island is more alluded to by Telltale Games as a major new set to announce at the convention. Design work on the game began in the autumn of 2008, while production has started at the early 2009. Each episode took approximately four months of work to complete. Than a permit from the series Telltale, LucasArts was involved in the development of the game through cooperation and approval of the game script, concept art and character design puzzle. Since the remake of The Secret of Monkey Island began developing before Tales of Monkey Island, LucasArts shared their art style guide with Telltale, so the art direction between the two products was similar. Writer Sean Vanaman noted that the license holder LucasArts was open to creative Telltale direction of the game, and not "put their foot down" on all aspects of production.
Grossman explained that they have chosen the WiiWare version of Tales of Monkey Island released alongside the PC version as part of their model, they chose to release between WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade, and want to "give the Wii a little love and bounce, Xbox Live was omitted from the basket loose due to the presence of both Telltale's Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures LucasArts special edition "of The Secret of Monkey Island on the system at the same time. Telltale Games has not ruled out a future release Xbox Live as a potential porting their games to the PlayStation 3, Mac OS and Linux systems. The first installment for the PC was released on July 7, 2009, with the Wii version following on July 27, 2009. Michael Stemmle compared Telltale's episodic production cycle Tales of Monkey Island for a relay compared with development on a full game, like Escape from Monkey Island is similar to marathon. According Stemmle may result in further development work on aspects such as pictures of the game right until the release date. Telltale had previously give the impression they were looking at their games to the Macintosh system, but had not released any plans for this plan. However, on Febraury 11, 2010, showed that Telltale Tales of Monkey Island was available for the Mac, and they would continue to support the platform by allowing users to vote on which series they would be the next port over.
Design director Dave Grossman (left) worked with Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer to the first two Monkey Island games, while Michael Stemmle (right) had the fourth co-designed game in the series.
The development team was led by Grossman, one of the original designers for the first two Monkey Island games, with Michael Stemmle, who co-designed Escape from Monkey Island and Sam & Max Hit the Road, to contribute to the design and writing the story with Mark Darin and Sean Vanaman. As for the puzzle game design, Stemmle noted that when he and his fellow designers were younger, they felt their task was "stub the player, but now Stemmle believes that "a lot better for the players feel smart", requires the inclusion of a hint system to help players avoid it stuck. The game's artistic direction has been developed by several other former members of LucasArts, with experience of both The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island, as well as several previous LucasArts adventure games. While not involved in the development, series creator Ron Gilbert assisted brainstorming the project, the development team claims that Gilbert's "thumbprints are all about" the game. On his blog, Gilbert wrote that he was "thrilled" to adapt both Telltale's and LucasArts' reimagining of the original game, which states that "the strange and humble to see something that you made 20 years ago to take on its own life ".
While both Gilbert and Grossman were engaged in the development, Tim Schafer, the third co-designer of the original game, was not associated with the project. Grossman noted that there was a "legal wrangling" Gilbert getting involved because of his involvement in another game development studio, and would have been too much trouble to also Schafer. Schafer said later that he was "delighted" for the new game in an interview with Joystiq, and that the project is in good hands under the leadership of Grossman's. The game limited-edition cover artwork was painted by Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell, who is responsible for the box art was to The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.
According to Grossman, Tales of Monkey Island series after an "imaginary" Monkey Island 5, which he considers "a blockbuster, 40-hour epic huge experience as the previous games" that would be good for Guybrush actions between the Escape from Tales of Monkey Island and Monkey Island. As with Telltale's other products, Tales of Monkey Island is developed episodically, split into five parts, Grossman explained that Telltale preference to a story in segments, than a game that is too long for people to play comfortably. However, unlike previous games, each episode is not considered as a stand-alone story, but a single chapter in an ongoing story. Very few game resources are reused between episodes, the removal of the central hubs and "comfort zone" that were present in Sam & Max Save the World and Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures. For the first time in the series, the game with fully rendered 3D graphics, even the Rated Escape from Monkey Island 3D is based on 2D pre-rendered environments. Grossman explained that Telltale prefer the 2D or 3D graphics offers advantages with respect to animations and cinematography, and the game engine used by Telltale for all its games, the Telltale Tool and Telltale's art department are totally focused on the development of 3D graphics.
Audio
The composer behind the previous games in the series, Michael Land, returned to score Tales of Monkey Island soundtrack. Jared Emerson-Johnson, who usually composes the soundtrack to Telltale's games, said that his role in the music of the game was "technical and administrative ". While Emerson-Johnson was willing to Land's work," the sound of the Monkey Island universe is all about helping Mike vision, so he was alone left to 'his thing', as only he can. "Dominic Armato, the voice actor for Guybrush introduced in The Curse of Monkey Island, described by LucasArts "David Collins as" the ultimate fanboy Monkey Island ", reprises his role as the main character, LucasArts Telltale encouraged the original cast as possible to maintain especially Armato. Armato enjoyed the opportunity to again voice the character, who come to accept that the series would not continue beyond ten years. Simultaneous development, Armato tried In order to Guybrush Tales of Monkey Island Guybrush sound more mature and experienced than in the special edition of The Secret of Monkey Island. The voice actress Elaine Marley in The Curse of Monkey Island, Alexandra Boyd, will also return to the voice of the character. Boyd was unable to travel to Telltale's studios in California, rather than recording her lines in London and the communication Skype with the director. Earl Boen initially spoken LeChuck, the character was instead voiced by Adam Harrington in the first episode, Kevin Blackton performing human LeChuck in chapters two to four. However, scrub back as the voice of the demon LeChuck at the end of the fourth episode, and has since included the rules for LeChuck's demon incarnation in the first episode. To help the actors' portrayal of characters, Telltale have lip sync system to implement a wide range of facial expressions present on character models.
