Chiltern teddy bears
British Teddy Bears always have a certain type of profession and are loved by children and collected by hundreds of teddy bear enthusiasts around the the world. There seems to be a special ingredient to adhere to a British born Teddy Bear. Perhaps it's the Teddy Bears 'finished' it looks that way appealing, a look that many collectors love.
There are many famous British teddy bear makers since the birth of Teddy's, and one of the makers is the beautiful Chiltern Company.
Way back in 1908, Joseph Eisenmann opened the Chiltern Toy Works at Chesham in Buckinghamshire. The factory began producing dolls, but in 1915 Chiltern their first Teddy Bear, he was known as "Master Teddy. Master Teddy was certainly a most distinguished looking teddy bear. He came in five sizes. He was dressed Teddy bear, his clothes made of cotton, with only parts of it whatsoever is made of mohair. He wore a pink and white striped shirt with a white collar him. He wore a red jacket and blue pants. Master Teddy had a very rounded head, and unlike many other teddy bears of his time, he had a very flat nose, but what made him so different his googly eyes. He had a big black nose and mouth, but he also had a red tongue. He had only felt soles on his feet. For his time he was a surprisingly different Teddy Bear.
Joseph Eisenmann died in 1919 and left his toy factory to his son-in-law, Leon Rees. Rees factory moved to new premises in Waterside, Chesham, but one year later, He was also a partnership with Harry Stone and formed the company, HG Stone & Co. Limited. a second factory was opened in Tottenham, London in 1921.
During the year 1923, the famous Hugmee Chiltern Teddy Bears were born. Chiltern Toys The name was registered in 1924.
At the beginning of World War 2 production stopped at Chiltern's Chesham factory. Then, soft toys Chiltern's production moved to Amersham in Buckinghamshire.
In 1967 Chiltern was taken over by another large British hug company and teddy bear makers, the wonderful Chad Valley Company. For a time the Teddy Bears made out on the label Chad Valley / Chiltern (such as the beautiful and popular Honey Pot Bear).
Chiltern Teddy Bears have always been and remains very popular with collectors around the world. Chiltern Teddy indeed, always to the highest quality so this means that many old Chiltern Teddy to survive these days and they can often be found in very good condition.
The Hugmee Teddy Bears came in many designs and patterns that meant, they built a vibrant and exciting collection of Teddy Bears.
Chiltern is also a selection of the activity Teddy Bears, including a popular Bear rider. This Teddy Bear was created in artificial silk plush in the year 1930. There was also a very popular "Bear-on-a-Trike." This Teddy Bear was made by Chiltern around 1958/1959 and designed by one of the chief architects Chiltern's, Pam Howells. This Teddy bear was attached to his trike through a few stabbing, so it is rather surprising that he once nearly fell off!
Chiltern also produced their "Tinga Ling 'Bears from around 1953. Tinga Ling Teddy Bear Teddy is probably the most popular made by Chiltern after the Second World War. Tinga Ling Teddy Bear made a tinkling sound when it was moved. He had shaved feet, comparable to those previously designed by Steiff their famous Teddy Babies range. Tinga Ling Teddy Bear is definitely the most different in appearance to their former and famous Hugmee Range.
Since 1960 many Chiltern Teddy Bears had poured black noses. These noses were supposedly based on the nose of a dog, instead of a nose of a bear. Whether you like this design or not, these noses Teddy Bears were and are still very popular.
We could end this article by saying that whether you have a Chiltern teddy bear in your collection of old teddy bears or not, they certainly are most worthy of the collection, creating a wonderful array of teddy bears with a wonderful and very complete history.
