Jazz Musicians and the Art of Transcribing Jazz Solos
Every great jazz musician has, at one time or another, transcribed jazz solos from recordings. Since jazz is an art that is auditory in nature, it makes complete sense that listening and copying the improvisations of past Jazz Masters will help you become a more consistent and skilled jazz improviser.
Transcribe a jazz solo, the repetitive listening and notation of a recorded jazz solos. To take full advantage of the process, the person studying by transcription of the solo would remember and internalize every note and inflection played by the improviser. "Transcription" refers to the activity of notes on paper Ting the exact notes and rhythms played by the improviser.

Charlie Parker could perhaps be called the most influential jazz artist of the 20th century. His inventive jazz improvisation changed the face of jazz and ushered in one of the most exciting periods of jazz: the bebop era.
Charlie Parker was born with an enormous amount of natural talent, but that does not mean that Charlie has never been hard on honing his craft. History shows Charlie spent nearly one year early in his musical career, remember – one note – the jazz solo by Lester Young of 78 rpm records.
Before jazz was widely available on 78 rpm records, musicians based on listening and learning in real time. The only way to learn jazz improvisation in the early days of jazz was to listen to live musicians and grab what you can of what they played. However, once played, the music was gone forever.
During the 1920s, artists such as Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and many others began recording their music and jazz improvisations on 78 rpm discs acetone. This leap in technology opened the way for future musicians "Study" of the jazz improvisations of their predecessors.
The 1950 saw the introduction of the tape machines and reel to reel tape recordings eventually. Magnetic tape made it possible for jazz musicians and forward the tape to rewind exact locations of certain passages and solos of a solo. No longer did players have to drop the needle "for worn discs to a solo or melody to learn. Some cassette players were specially made for musicians, allowing them to slow down parts or all of an inclusion in the half or quarter speed. This seemed to help, but slowing down analog tape made with pitch problems and faith, which was annoying to say the least.
In recent years, Computers have assisted jazz musicians transcribe recordings in ways previously considered impossible. Cheap or free computer programs have made it possible to delay rapid passages without fidelity or pitch. Other advantages of computer-aided transcription include the opportunity for important and accurate looping of passages for ease change in learning, and even help with notes tion sites that are played.
Transcribing and studying the great jazz solos, one of the smartest and beneficial activities every musician can undertake to sharpen his or her craft. Even with the wonders of modern technology, the process still takes time and effort though. Remember not the knowledge and skills you acquire when using transcribing jazz solos to perform with live musicians. Nothing will replace the experience of playing jazz others!
