Firing of a flintlock rifle In Twelve "Easy" Steps
I wonder if we ever thought how easy we have modern firearms? Purpose, the tractor and the fire here. We even have scopes to enable everyone to target with pinpoint accuracy to hit.
It was not always so simple. In the 17th and 18th centuries, before the advent of ball and percussion caps and long before metal patterns on the scene, loading a flintlock gun was a complicated process to the best of times. It's hard to imagine how long ago that shooters were able to all those involved to conduct business with an angry grizzly or a certain enemy rushing at them!
Here are the twelve steps required to load and fire a flintlock rifle or musket:
1. Bite the paper cartridge and tear it open with your teeth.
2. Push the peak (a Frisbie called <i> </ i>) and pour a small amount of powder into the flash pan.
<i> The powder in the pan was designed to ignite the main powder charge in the firing chamber of the barrel, which would propel the lead ball from the barrel. However, the spark from the flint hit often causes a rapid explosion in the pan not being charged to the ignition. This is where our expression, to get a "flash in the pan." </ I>
3. Push the <i> Frissen </ i> back into position to cover the flash pan.
4. Keep up the muzzle of the musket.
5. Pour the rest of the powder over the muzzle.
6. Place a lead ball in the barrel.
7. Push the cartridge paper in the bin (the "cotton").
8. Remove the ramrod from its storage tube under the barrel and use it to the cotton ball and pushing through the barrel.
<i> This was easier than with a musket with a gun. The vessel had a musket larger diameter, the inside was smooth and polished. A gun had spiral grooves in the metal inside the barrel, which made the ball spin as it leaves the barrel, and the accuracy of his flight. The fit of the bullet in the barrel had to be tighter the spin, so to give the grooves and smaller diameter made it difficult for the wadding and ram the ball down to the bottom to the firing chamber. Although gunshot further and more precisely, the lower rate of fire was the primary reason was muskets for use by military units until the late 1800. Rate of fire was an important consideration in a battle where the speed of the firing was a matter of life and death. 9. Replace the ramrod into the storage pipe.
10. Increasing the musket in a firing position, bracing the butt against the shoulder.
11. Pull the hammer.
12. Aim and fire.
<i> We have all seen scenes in movies where an intrepid frontiersman, printed for a time of danger, just left the ramrod in the barrel and fired, instead of removing it from the barrel and replacing it in the storage pipe. The ramrod was then a part of the ammunition propelled from a barrel when the charge dismissed. In an extreme situation where those extra few seconds were a matter of life or death, this may well have done. But unless you had time to recover the ramrod from where it flew, its loss would make the weapon useless, so it seems unlikely that these frontiersmen made a habit of doing this. What has become of the ramrod once it is used, it is obvious from the above steps that the loading and firing a flintlock was far from a simple statement, and Dan'l Boone and numerous other settlers and soldiers who used them certainly deserve our admiration for being able to do it with such a high degree of dexterity and skill. </ I>
