Did not meet the University of Tennessee used to play the University of Kentucky for a barrel of beer per year?
Growing up I was under the impression that a quiet rivalry between the universities of Tennessee and Kentucky football teams played for in a beer barrel per year. I can no mention, however. Did they stop playing for it or did I get my facts wrong as a child?
Yes, but the PC police picked him off years ago. It was still visible in Stokely Athletic Center on the Knoxville campus back when I was in school and dinosaurs inhabited the earth. From the UT website: "The Original Battle for the Beer Barrel was coined in 1925 by a Kentucky booster club for football rivalry with Tennessee, so the series would have a trophy similar to Old Oaken Bucket Purdue and Michigan's Little Brown Jug. The first match was the barrel in Lexington, a 23-20 victory for the Wildcats. The vessel exchanged hands many times, both at competitions and during raids on the campus of the opposing school. Tennessee has a 60-23-9 edge in the series in Kentucky where the Beer Barrel Trophy match was halted because of the tragic deaths of several football players in Kentucky in a 1997 alcohol-related car accident.
