Vintage Clothing – The best of each decade
Vintage clothing has become very popular recently. This is partly due to the timeless nature of many vintage items and properties such as the detail and craftsmanship used in the production of vintage clothing. It is also due to trends in vintage styles made popular by celebrities such as Dita Von Teese, Kate Moss and Julia Roberts.
Every decade or era has its own style or vintage pieces that are particularly coveted. Perhaps this is one of the main attractions of vintage clothing. The best of each decade of age is kept as vintage clothing and the worst fall by the wayside. You might think of vintage clothing as a kind of natural selection of the fashion world where only the fittest survive and the finest clothes.
Most vintage dealers consider some of the years 1920 to 1970 as vintage, although many now consider clothes off the eighties as vintage. Some clothing designers have become iconic vintage very shortly after being produced.
The twenties conjure up images of beaded flapper dresses. This style is particularly important in this decade as a symbol of the girls that the new modern style of dress embraced with shorter (than the previous decades) dresses and danced all night at Jazz dancing. Silhouettes in the twenties were also very masculine with shapeless dresses and emphasized busts and waists. Coco Chanel was the most influential designer of the twenties and the label still has strong ties with this time.
Fashion in the thirties and forties was dominated by the conditions caused by economic depression, war and rationing. Important components of military clothing were inspired and classic styles that are practical, not out of fashion. The wasp waste and Dior New Look started in the year forty, but not really become popular until the fifties.
The fifties had a number of major styles that have become popular in vintage clothing, these include Dior New Look, Chanel suits and boxy jackets, jeans and circle skirts. The fun and young styles were popularized after the end of the war and rationing.
Key Vintage pieces from the sixties is that picture of Carnaby Street and the swinging sixties to bring to mind. Mod dresses and mini skirts, May Quant and Pucci psychedelic prints. The seventies followed with hippie styles, disco outfits and torches.
It's really interesting to consider what the current fashions and styles from this decade are likely to be the test of time survive and become vintage in the coming years

Go to a thrift store. Actually, there are many things at Urban Outfitters and American Apparel which mod looking. H & M probably has the best / most mod looking clothes already, and they are a lot cheaper than American Apparel or Urban Outfitters.
