Do You Want to Fight your parking ticket?
Copyright (c) 2010 James Parrish
It is the paper they write you a ticket, no toilet paper.
You would not think people would have trouble making the distinction, but someone should probably have told Alexander Bailey. Bailey, of Medinah, Illinois actually is charged with a crime to smear excrement on a parking ticket he received to write a note explaining what those mysterious stains were brown and the filling all in the payment box.
It seems that "stupid criminals" have more than their fair share of news lately (Manassas woman gets DUI after hitting a patrol car illuminated, man receives DUI after he was pulled over driving a child's Barbie car, etc), but this is a new level.
The city employee who opened the envelope told the police that she was shocked by the brown spots on the ticket, and the awful smell that accompanied them. At that time she found Bailey's comment, explaining exactly what was spread on the paper.
Bailey's note to the ticket (and pay) stated that he wiped his back, effectively using of the ticket as a piece of toilet paper, in an act of protest.
Officials are not saying how he paid for the original parking ticket, but he has managed to to refrain from wiping his ass, may he ended up better off.
Bailey was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct (a crime). He is released from prison after posting a $ 5000 bond and is due in court on June 1st.
Nobody likes getting tickets. In fact, the Washington, DC seen a record number tickets contested this year. But sometimes it is best to leave well enough alone. That fifteen dollar bill is nothing compared to the time and effort Bailey will now have to devote to protecting from his record.
But somehow, almost three fifths of drivers challenging their DC-area traffic or parking beat them. Why?
Although the possibility of "beating the ticket" seem high in this circumstance, these numbers are nothing if you compare them tickets actually distributed. Typically, the only people who try to fight such a small fine, those who have a strong case.
Typically, these people have very good business, or at least a somewhat valid excuse (such failure to pay a parking because it was broken, and those pictures of the broken meter).
General, when you're dealing with a small fine, may be best to just pay. For more serious traffic violations, however, you may want to consult a lawyer to see what the best way to record to protect.
