UTSA researchers win $ 1.8 million to study "curling artery '

A team of researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio has been awarded a $ 1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. This money will be used to help study a common condition called aortic curling.
UTSA researchers led by Hai-Chao Han, Ph.D. think they might something big. They are pinpointing the reasons blood vessels twist and turn. It is a phenomenon known as curling or tortuosity artery.

Computer models help figure out how the cells in the walls of the artery change. "If we can prove that we can discover what technique to treat," said Han. "For if you know how it develops, you can somehow catch even an early stage or at a later stage. "
The twisting and curling may affect ships of all sizes, from small micro-vessels all the way up to the aorta. Finding a new treatment for varicose veins and twisted may be important in a battle of America's leading causes of death: heart disease.
After the five-year study, Han plans to publish his results. He is hopeful his team will help you discover new ways to a condition that can affect up to 40% of people in their lives to deal with.
