Hudson River
Names
The names of the Hudson River a complicated story. It was called Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk, the Great Mohegan, by the Iroquois, or as the Lenape Indians called it in Unami, Muhheakantuck.
In the early days of European exploration of the Hudson was known and the Mauritius River. It is said that the name given by Henry Hudson in honor of Prince Maurice of Nassau, but it also said it was the name given by his sixteenth-century European adventurers, explorers and fishermen who she knew as River Mauritius, 'The River of Mountains ". [Citation needed]
The Hudson was named the "North River" by the Dutch, who called the Delaware River the "South River." The name "North River" was used in New York City until the beginning of 1900, with a continued limited use in modern day. The term remains in the radio communications between commercial shipping, especially among the Tappan Sea.
It was the English that comes from using the name "Hudson" ecause Hudson had found the river while exploring for the Dutch.
Geography
The official source of the Hudson is Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains. However, the waterway known as Lake Feldspar Brook and the Opalescent River, feeding into the Hudson at Tahawus. The actual Hudson River begins several miles north of Tahawus on Henderson Lake. The Hudson is joined at Troy (north of Albany) by the Mohawk River, the main tributary, just south of Federal Dam Upper Hudson River Valley separates the Lower Hudson River Valley or simply the Hudson River Valley. The river then flows south, between the Catskill Mountains and the Taconic Mountains, significantly broadening on the Tappan Zee, and finally flows between Manhattan Island and the New Jersey Palisades and the Atlantic Ocean at New York Bay, an arm of the ocean, where the formation of New York Harbor.

The lower Hudson is actually a tidal estuary, with tidal influence extending to the the Federal Dam at Troy far. Strong tides make parts of New York Harbor difficult and dangerous to navigate. During the winter, ice floes drift south or north, depending on the tides. Mahican the name of the river, Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk, means "the river that flows both ways." [Citation needed] The Hudson is often mistaken for one of the largest rivers in the United States, but it is an estuary for most of its length below Troy and therefore only a small fraction of fresh water, about 15,000 cubic feet (425 m) per second, is present. The mean freshwater discharge at the mouth of the river in New York is about 21,400 cubic feet (606 meters) per second. The Hudson and its tributaries, notably the Mohawk River, draining a large area. Parts of the Hudson River bays form as Weehawken Cove in Hoboken and Weehawken.
The Hudson sometimes called, in geological terms, a "drowned" river. The rise in sea level following the retreat of the Wisconsin glacier, the most recent ice age, have resulted in a marine incursion that drowned the coastal plain and brought salt water well above the mouth of the River. The deeply eroded old riverbed beyond the current shoreline, Hudson Canyon, is a rich fishing area. The former riverbed is clearly delineated beneath the waters of the Atlantic, to the edge of the continental shelf.

The Delaware and Hudson Canal ended at the Hudson at Kingston, runs southwest to the coal fields of northeastern Pennsylvania.

The natural beauty of the Hudson River to the Hudson Valley earned the nickname "America's Rhine, are compared with those of the famous 40 miles (65 km) stretch German Rhine valley between the towns of Bingen and Koblenz. A similar 30-mile (48 km) stretch on the east bank of the Hudson has been designated the Hudson River Historic District, a National Historic Landmark. The Hudson was nominated as one of the American Heritage Rivers in 1997.
The Narrows
The Narrows, a tidal flow between the New York City boroughs Brooklyn and Staten Island, connects the upper and lower parts of New York Bay. It has long been considered as the marine gateway New York City and traditionally the main entrance to the harbor.
The Narrows were most likely formed about 6,000 years ago At the end of the last ice age. Previously, Staten Island and Long Island members, preventing completion of the Hudson River through The Narrows. At that time, the river Hudson emptied into the Atlantic Ocean via a more westerly course through parts of the current northern New Jersey, along the eastern side of the Watchung Mountains to Bound Brook, New Jersey and then into the Atlantic Ocean via Raritan Bay. An accumulation of water in the Upper Bay finally allowed on the Hudson River to break through that was the last land mass connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn to The Narrows form as it exists today. This allowed the Hudson River to a shorter route to the Atlantic Ocean using the current exchange rate between New Jersey and New York City (Waldman, 2000).
North River

North River is an alternate name for the southernmost part of the Hudson, mostly in relation to all or a portion of the waterway between Manhattan and Hudson County. The colonial name given by the Dutch to the entire river in the early seventeenth century, the term fell out of popular use most of it some time in the early 1900s, but remains used locally by seamen and others, as well as some charts and maps. The term also lives on in the names of a variety of facilities such as the North River piers, North River Tunnels, and the North River Sewage treatment plant, and has strong historical ties to New York Harbor.
Haverstraw Bay
Haverstraw Bay, located just north of the Tappan Zee (the widest part of the river), located between Croton Point in the southeast and the northwest town of Haverstraw. Haverstraw Bay is a popular destination for recreational boaters and is home to many yacht clubs and marinas, including Croton Yacht Club, Croton Sailing School, Half Moon Bay Marina (Croton) Penny Bridge Marina, Minisceongo Yacht Club, Stony Point Bay Marina, Haverstraw Marina, and is crossed by NY Waterway's Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry.

The Hudson River is navigable for a great distance above the mile 0 (at 4042.1 'N, 7401.5' W) from the battery. The original Erie Canal, opened in 1825 to connect the Hudson with Lake Erie, emptied into the Hudson in Albany Basin, only three miles (5km) south of the Federal Dam at Troy (at mile 134). The channel is activated shipping between cities on the Great Lakes and Europe via the Atlantic Ocean. The New York State Canal System, the successor to the Erie Canal, runs into the Hudson River north of Troy and makes Using the Federal Dam Lock 1 and natural waterways where possible. The first railway in New York, the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, opened in 1831 between Albany and Schenectady on the Mohawk River, allowing passengers to bypass the slowest part of the Erie Canal.
In the north of Troy, the Champlain Canal split of the Erie Canal and continued north along the west side of the Hudson Thomson, where it crossed to the east side. At Fort Edward the canal links the Hudson River, heading northeast to Lake Champlain. A canal barge down the Hudson from now on that point, roughly the same route (also parallel to the Delaware and Hudson Railway Saratoga and Whitehall Railroad) to Lake Champlain in Whitehall. Lake Champlain boats may further north in Canada, the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
The Hudson Valley was also attractive for railroads, once technology progressed to the point where it was feasible to build the necessary bridges over tributaries. The Troy and Greenbush Railroad was chartered in 1845 and opened in the same year, running a short distance to the east between Troy and Greenbush (east of Albany),. The Hudson River Railroad was chartered in the coming years as a continuation of the Troy and Greenbush south to New York City, and was completed in 1851. In 1866 the Hudson River Bridge opened over the river between the Greenbush and Albany, making it through traffic between the Hudson River Railroad and the New York Central Railroad west to Buffalo. When Poughkeepsie Rail Bridge was opened in 1879, became the longest single span bridge in the world. On October 3, 2009, reopened as a pedestrian walkway across the Hudson, as a part of the Hudson River Quadricentennial Centennial Celebrations and connects more than 25 miles of the existing pedestrian paths.
New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railway began in Weehawken Terminal and ran the west bank of the Hudson as a competitor of the merged New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Construction was slow, and was finally completed in 1884, the New York Central purchased the line in the coming years.

The Hudson is crossed at numerous points by bridges, tunnels and ferries. The width of the Lower Hudson River required major feats of engineering to cross, the results today visible in the Verrazano-Narrows and the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and Pennsylvania Railroad and the PATH tubes. The Troy-Waterford Bridge at Waterford was the first bridge across the Hudson, opened in 1809. The Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad was chartered in 1832 and opened in 1835, including the Green Island Bridge, the first bridge across the Hudson River south of Federal Dam.
The Upper Hudson River Valley was also useful for the track. Sections of the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad, Troy and Boston and Albany Railroad Northern Railroad ran alongside the Hudson River between Troy and Mechanicville. North of Mechanicville the shore was bare of Glens Falls, where short Glens Falls Railroad ran along the eastern shore. Glens Falls on the Hudson River runs west to Corinth before going north, in Corinth The Adirondack Railway starts running along the Hudson's West Bank. The original Adirondack Railway opened by 1871, ending at North Creek riverside. In World War II Tahawus opened an extension, the site of valuable iron and titanium mines. The expansion continued along the Hudson River in Hamilton County, and then further north where the Hudson makes a curve to the west, crossing the Hudson and along the western shore of the Boreas River. Tahawus south of the route back to the eastern bank of the Hudson the rest of the way to the terminus.

as comment above was used to kill the Dutch word for creek. This can obviously lead to confusion, since killing is an English word with an entirely different meaning. Sometimes the original Dutch colonial name is preserved, as in Poestin Kill. Sometimes the Dutch name is redundant combined with the English word, as in Fishkill Creek (Fish Creek Creek, a creek is not Named after the killing of fish).
Theodore Roosevelt's historic route
On September 14 1901, when Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was at Lake Tear of the Clouds after returning from a hike to Mount Marcy summit when he received a message informing him that President William McKinley, who was killed two weeks earlier but was expected to survive, had a turn for the worse.
Roosevelt ran a decrease of 10 miles (16 km) on the southwest side of the mountain to the nearest station on the podium Long Lake, New York. He then took an interest of 40 miles (64 km) at midnight stagecoach ride through the winding Adirondack Roads to the Adirondack station at North Creek, where he discovered that McKinley was deceased. Roosevelt took the train to Buffalo, New York, where he was officially sworn in as president.
The 40 miles (64 km) route is now designated the Roosevelt-Marcy Trail.
Pollution
In 1966, Pete Seeger and Toshi Seeger founded Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. This is both an environmental education organization and an effective boat (a boat) that promotes awareness of the river and its history. Clearwater has gained national recognition for its activism starting in the year 1970 for a "clean up the PCB contamination of the Hudson River caused by industrial production by General Electric Corporation (GE) and other companies on the edge of the River.
GE's Hudson Falls and Fort Edward facilities discharged between 209,000 pounds (95,000 kg) and 1.3 million pounds (590,000 kg) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the river from 1947 to 1977. In 1976 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) banned all fishing in the Upper Hudson due to health problems with PCBs. In 1983, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared a 200 miles (322 km) section of the river from Hudson Falls to New York City, a Superfund cleanup site that are. GE began dredging clean to the PCB on May 15, 2009.

In 1980, Consolidated Edison agreed to the 17-year struggle for a pump-storage hydropower build on Storm King Mountain valleys. This action spurred the River Keeper program that grew to a global umbrella organization, the Waterkeeper Alliance.
Other forms of pollution affecting the river are: accidental wastewater discharges, urban runoff, heavy metals, furans, dioxins, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
A study reported in the August 2008 issue of the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry suggests that mercury in common Hudson River fish, including striped bass, yellow perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and carp, has fallen sharply over the past three decades. The findings were from a large database of mercury analysis of fish fillets built by NYSDEC and collected a large portion of the length of the Hudson from New York City waters to the Adirondack watershed. The study indicates that the trends are consistent with the recovery the Hudson River has experienced in recent decades, now pressure groups, officials and businesses begin to work together to help clean up the river system.
NYSDEC has listed various parts of the Hudson River as an impaired water quality due to PCBs, cadmium and other toxic compounds. Hudson River tributaries with impaired water quality (not necessarily the same pollutants as the main stem Hudson) are Mohawk River, Humor Kill, Schuyler Creek, Saw Mill River, Esopus Creek, Hoosic River, Quaker Creek and Batten Kill. Many lakes in the Hudson basin are also mentioned.
The Hudson River Estuary system is part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.

The New Jersey Devils / New York Rangers hockey rivalry known as the Hudson River rivalry because the Devils are located in Newark and the Rangers are based across the Hudson River in Manhattan.
There hoax have been reported sightings of a sea serpent in the Hudson River Kipsy named after the city of Poughkeepsie. There is a mural painted by Dick and Margaret Crenson just off Main Street in Poughkeepsie. There have also been reported sightings elsewhere along the Hudson River.
On January 15, 2009, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was dumped here due to multiple bird strikes. The flight departed from LaGuardia Airport. The landing was a success, and there were no casualties.
