Where is Spain on the map?
A good, detailed map of Spain provides the viewer with a quick image of where Spain lies in relation to the region and the entire world. Spain is part of Europe and is located in the southwestern part of the continent at forty degrees north and four degrees west. It is not a large country totaling 504,782 square kilometer. Comparable to the United States, it is only slightly more than twice the size of Oregon. Spain includes the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, as well as a few island chains. Located off the coast of Morocco, the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Penon de Alhucemas, Penon de Velez de la Gomera and Islas Charfarinas.
Spain borders include France, Gibraltar, Portugal and two communities of Morocco, but one of the most popular is the border along the eastern border along the Mediterranean Sea. This beautiful coastline has changed this region of the country into a major tourist destination. Its around 5000 km and the coastal beaches are a major boost to tourism economy of the country. The area of climate also contributes to the high tourism in the area. In general, the weather is moderate on the coast, while inland areas may be much colder in winter and hotter in summer.
The Strait of Gibraltar on the southernmost tip of Spain and is an important passage from the Mediterranean into the Atlantic Ocean. The town is located Algecrias and monitors tourism trader and the trade through the area. The Alicante along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea is very popular with tourists from all over the world but mainly from Europe and Spain. Madrid, capital of Spain, is located in the center of the country near the River Tagus. The city of Seville is located in the southwestern part of Spain and is known for its Spanish culture and art. Sevilla is also known as a financial center. Barcelona and Cartagena are also important cities in Spain. Barcelona is in the Balearic Sea and along the Cartegena Mediterranean. Cities in the northern part of the country in the Bay of Biscay, the coastal cities of Gijon, Santander, Coruña and Vigo.
With so many cities around or along a coastline, it's no surprise that fishing and salt production are two of the main industries. However, despite the easy access to water and history in the salt trade, there is still a relatively high unemployment. For visitors to the area, though, many of these cities offer a taste of local life and Spanish culture.
