Barbie is 50 years old in 2009. Wow I wish we got everything at 50. Of course she has plastic surgery in recent decades. She even has a body to replace.
Barbie was first created in 1959 by Mattel and millions have been sold all over the world since then. Barbies official birthday is March 9, 1959, that when she was seen at the New York Toy Fair. She wore a black and white zebra one piece swimsuit, high heel open toe shoes and striped earrings have white sunglasses with blue lenses. She has blonde or brunette hair pulled back in a ponytail and she is highly arched eyebrows and white irises. She was made from a type of plastic that faded to white over the years. She has copper tubes in the holes in her legs and feet for mounting on a pedestal. She is marked Japan on the bottom of the right foot and the body they marked Barbie TM Pats. Pend. If you find one of these dolls in good condition you have a collector's joy is worth a lot of money. The exact value depends on condition and completeness of the doll. Any missing parts or damages will lower the value considerably. This doll is known as the # 1 Ponytail Barbie.
The Ponytail Barbie # 2 is the same as # 1, except that no copper pipes in the holes in the legs or feet. The base had changed and made extensions of the pop support.
The # 3 Ponytail Barbie is the same as # 2 but has different eyebrows and blue irises. They have blue or brown eyeliner makeup.
The # 4 Ponytail Barbie is made of a non-fading plastic with it's flesh color. She has blue eyeliner makeup.
The # 5 Ponytail Barbie had a new hollow plastic body. The older dolls were made of solid plastic. The markings are similar except that it is characterized R Pats. Pend. rather than TM Pats. Pend. A new hair color was added to the line, known as Titian, and dolls with those hair are scarcer and therefore more valuable than the blonde or brunette dolls. Some of these dolls had a problem in the plastic where a bold look with age developed. If you are a matte faced doll is worth more than a bold faced one.
The # 6 Ponytail Barbie was made of a new vinyl that does not develop a greasy appearance as he ages. Her lips and nails are a pink-red instead of the previous bright red. She is dressed in a red swimsuit and has an open toe, red shoes.
The # 7 Ponytail Barbie was made in different colors including her brunette, Titian, lemon blonde and ash blonde. Nails and this doll lips are coral red. This new edition was in the period 1962-1963 and the markings were Midge TM copyright 1962/Barbie Copyright 1958 by Mattel. Dolls with this new markings are often called the # 7 ponytail Barbie, but many people still call them # 6. Dolls made for the transition in 1962 are becoming scarcer and more valuable than the new edition.
Condition is undoubtedly the most important factor in establishing a value on the early Barbie dolls. Collectors want a doll that is clean, completely original and not damaged.Such Pop gets a top price. If the doll is in original packaging and in perfect condition, it is a very desirable collector doll and gets a premium price. Dolls that in any way is repaired, restored or repainted are worth less than the left in the faded original condition.
What you can expect early collectible Barbie dolls to find? The answer is almost everywhere, if you know what you're looking for. The vast majority of the public have no knowledge of the old Barbie dolls, or the fact that they are valuable. You can sometimes old Barbie dolls by look in thrift or second hand shops, flea markets and garage sales. Make sure you carry a magnifying glass to read the markings on the Barbie dolls when you look there. Best of Luck.
